What You Need To Know:
In the French movie MY AFTERNOONS WITH MARGUERITTE, everyone makes fun of Germaine, the town fool. Even his own mother can’t stand him and has abused him since childhood. Now, in the local bar, everyone still makes fun of him, except for one naïve buxom girl who wants to have his baby. In the midst of this dreary life, Germaine meets Margueritte sitting on his park bench. Margueritte is a 95-year-old woman who treats Germaine with respect and teaches him how to read. Then, Germaine’s mother dies; his hippie paramour gets pregnant; and, he realizes Margueritte is his surrogate mother.
MY AFTERNOONS WITH MARGUERITE is beautifully photographed, but that’s all you can say about it. Even so, the colors are washed out. Gerard Depardieu is a great actor, but he fails this part. He’s too savvy to be the local idiot. Most of the characters are over the top, and the dialogue is static and uninteresting, even when listening to it in French. This could have been a heartwarming movie. As it is, it’s mediocre in every respect and shows once more why French people love American movies instead of their own.
