More Detail:

RETURN TO THE HIDING PLACE is one of the most exciting, riveting, edge-of-your seat World War II movies ever made.

THE HIDING PLACE movie, which was a great success, focused on Corrie ten Boom, who with her father and sister saved many Jews during World War II. This movie focuses on one of the students, Hans Poley, who’s hiding in her house who becomes a major figure in the Dutch Resistance.

The movie opens in 1944 in Amersfoort Concentration Camp. Hans writes in his diary when shots ring out, and he sees five of his friends being executed by the Nazis.

The movie flashes back to 1940 Haarlem in Holland where Hans is the president of the student body at his college. Hans is training to be a physicist. He’s absolutely brilliant.

When the Nazi commandant Roben Leben addresses the student body to tell them they need to be at the front of the Nazi takeover of Holland, Hans turns his back to him. The commandant tries to blackmail Hans into saying he’s joining the Nazi Party. When they go outside on the porch to address the students, Hans says he’s not in the kingdom of Adolph Hitler but in the Kingdom of Jesus Christ. He jumps off the porch, saving his sister in the process.

Hans hides out in Corrie ten Boom’s house, which is crowded with Jews. He gets a false identity, joins the Dutch Resistance and helps to organize students to rescue Jews.

The Nazi commander commits atrocity after atrocity. The cruelest is saying he’s going to turn this sweet little Jewish boy’s skin into a lampshade, which it appears that he does, although no gruesome details are shown.

Hans miraculously escapes several times and saves many Jews. The question is, will he survive? Will the Nazis ever be defeated? Will the Jews be saved from the commander’s goal of annihilating every one of them?

RETURN TO THE HIDING PLACE is superbly written. There are several fascinating subplots that move the story forward. There are several Christian romances that break your heart. The movie highlights within the strong plot structure true story after true story of people willing to sacrifice their lives for others, even those who don’t like them. The Gospel is proclaimed in word and deed throughout the movie. The direction, cinematography, and music are excellent. That said, the caution comes in the fact that this is a violent war movie. The violence isn’t gratuitous or very bloody, but it is bone chilling. The movie stresses that people of faith and values should save lives.

RETURN OF THE HIDING PLACE is highly recommended for older children and families.
