"The Unknown Faith of a Legendary Actor"

What You Need To Know:

STEVE MCQUEEN: AMERICAN ICON is one of those unique documentaries that’s both entertaining and informative. Steve McQueen grew up in a dysfunctional family where his father left the family when Steve was 6 months old, and he had a troubled youth. From a young age, Steve showed an affinity for racing. After a brief stint in the military, he tried his hand at acting. Some successes in movies eventually led to huge successes because of movies like and the BLOB and THE GREAT ESCAPE. However, a self-destructive lifestyle eventually led Steve to leave his Hollywood career behind. Then God began to work in transformative ways in Steve’s life.

STEVE MCQUEEN: AMERICAN ICON does a very entertaining job of revealing the real Steve McQueen. Holding the viewer’s attention, it’s almost a drama. Some of the interviews are terrific with people such as Mel Gibson, but some are repetitious. Even so, this is a great movie for those interested in Hollywood. Finally, it’s a must-see movie for everyone to see the power of grace and God’s providence in moving inexorably in a man’s life.

More Detail:

STEVE MCQUEEN: AMERICAN ICON is one of those unique documentaries that is both entertaining and informative. The story holds your attention, touches your heart and brings joy to your soul.

Steve McQueen grew up in a dysfunctional family where his father left the family when Steve was 6 months old, and Steve never saw him again. Some of his most impressionable moments were visiting his grandparents’ farm where he begins to love racing bikes and doing outlandish adrenaline-inducing activities.

By the time he is a young teenager, he has been arrested several times and sent to homes for truants and rebellious youth. After serving in the Marine Corps, where he both exhibited valor and rebelliousness, Steve decided to go into acting.

He studied with the famous acting teacher Lee Strasberg (where Lili and I studied), but he was not suited for theater. He found his métier when he starred in a movie directed by a close MOVIEGUIDE® friend Irvin “Shorty” Yeaworth, titled THE BLOB. THE BLOB became a tremendous success and showed that Steve McQueen knew how to handle the camera, react to scenes and play action roles. Yeaworth and his crew were all Christians who formed Good News Productions and inspired our Good News Communications, Inc. ministry.

Steve went on to become the highest paid star in Hollywood. Doing his own stunts, Steve often worked with a stunt director named Stan Barrett, who was also an evangelical Christian.

Then, his career collapsed while he was working on his own movie, LE MANS. He got his reboot in Hollywood when he starred in the GETAWAY, and then followed his biggest role opposite Paul Newman in THE TOWERING INFERNO.

While pursuing his acting, Steve went through several wives and many one night affairs, as well as a lot of drugs. He often retreated from Hollywood and tried to lose himself in obscurity. He was impassioned by car racing and motorcycle racing, and did many of his own stunts in movies. The movies became famous just because of his daring stunts. When he started taking flying lessons, the instructor was another Christian.

Just then his life took a unique turn. Steve McQueen was a Hollywood icon, but like many in Hollywood, he was a broken and troubled man. He started going to church, married his live-in girlfriend and became an on fire convert for Jesus.

STEVE MCQUEEN: AMERICAN ICON does a very entertaining job of revealing the real Steve McQueen. Holding the viewer’s attention, it’s almost a drama. Some of the interviews are terrific with people such as Mel Gibson, and some of Steve’s former paramours, but some of them are repetitious. It also ends with a call to salvation from author and pastor Greg Laurie. A very few times, the movie becomes a little slow and self-reflective, but you will be rewarded if you stick to it.

Even so, this is a great movie for those interested in Hollywood. Of course, it’s also a great movie for Steve McQueen fans. Finally, it’s a must-see movie for everyone to see the power of grace and God’s providence in moving inexorably in a man’s life.
