The Relationship Between Jesus’ Tomb And New Beginnings

Rabbi Jason Sobel is drawing parallels between Jesus’ death and burial in the tomb, and His resurrection.

“He dies in a garden. Why? Because the fall happened in a garden,” he said while appearing on Annie F. Downs’ THAT SOUNDS FUN podcast. “It all began in a garden, it all ends in the garden. And then, He’s placed in the garden tomb.”

He continued, “Why a garden tomb? In Hebrew, the same word for womb…is the same word for tomb…The tomb represents a place where people physically go to die…a womb is the opposite. It’s the birthing of everything.”

Sobel described both as “gateways,” explaining, “The tomb is a gateway or a door to the next life, and the womb is the gateway to this life.”

“When Jesus dies, he transforms the tomb into the womb,” he said. “What is meant to kill us is the very thing God uses to birth us.”

He elaborated on the topic during an appearance on PRAISE ON TBN, saying, “Here’s the beautiful thing with Jesus: he’s in the business of turning our tombs into a womb. The very thing that seems like it’s going to be the end — he transforms death into life. He transforms the end into a new beginning….and it’s out of the tomb…that victory comes.”

Sobel posted the clip on his Instagram, captioning the video, “What looks like the end is often the beginning in disguise. In Scripture, the place of burial becomes the place of birth. The grave that was meant to silence the promise becomes the very ground from which new life emerges. The same God who formed Adam- האדם from the dust knows how to breathe life back into what feels lifeless.”

Sobel recently released a new book, “Transformed by the Messiah: How Old and New Testament Jesus Connections Reveal God’s Intentional Story for Your Life.”

“Part of my passion is to help people see the Bible and, in this case, the life of Jesus in high definition,” he told ChurchLeaders of why he chose to write the book. “There was something so satisfying when at the end you saw all the dots connect in the picture that was formed. I think when we connect the dots between the Old and the New [Testaments] and see how it connects, we see the life of Jesus in high definition.”

He continued, “And there’s such wisdom there because the life of Jesus is a model for the transformation God wants to bring in our life.”

Sobel’s explanation of the relationship between tomb and womb is an example of the way God can make every ending a beginning.
