THE MAGIC NEVER ENDS: THE LIFE AND WORK OF C.S. LEWIS

PBS is not known for its evangelistic programming, but THE MAGIC NEVER ENDS proves that the network is not anti-evangelism. In fact, this program is one of the most Christ-centered evangelistic television programs in recent history.

C.S. Lewis expert Walter Hooper comments in this moving documentary that the best writers sometimes lift a corner of the curtain to let their audience see a little bit of the truth. However, C.S. Lewis pulls the curtains back to the full width of the stage to let the audience see the whole truth, which is nothing less than to see the world as God sees it.

C.S. Lewis was uniquely prepared for this task. He was born and reared in Ireland, which has produced so many great writers, and spent hours in imaginative play with his brother. Because his mother died when he was very young, and he suffered the loss of his best friend on the battlefield in WWI, he decided to reject God or to consider God to be malevolent. It was only after days of discussions with J.R.R. Tolkien and G.K. Chesterton that he suddenly came to realize the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

This arduous, intellectual conversion made him a formidable apologist to the unconverted at a time when England had become a materialistic, post-Christian culture. With uncanny insight, he made the case for salvation and the Gospel in mere Christian terms that won millions of converts to Jesus Christ. He wrote a children’s series (THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA) that is still one of the most beloved series of all time and sells more copies now than it did when it was written.

People argue over which one of his works was the best. The fact is, they were all phenomenal and have helped millions of people to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

This documentary not only helps the audience understand Lewis, but it helps them understand the Gospel. Furthermore, it pays close attention to the work of God and His Holy Spirit in C.S. Lewis’s life. If this documentary had been made for the Christian bookseller’s market, it would be a best seller. As it is, Christians everywhere should buy it as an evangelistic tool to help their friends and neighbors understand “the magic that never ends.”
