Tyson is homeschooled by his mother until she realizes he can’t learn algebra. Tyson’s father is the head coach of the school’s football team and is considered one of the most successful high-school football coaches in their league. Tyson, who is on the autistic spectrum, can’t play football and, at least to his father’s knowledge, is not athletic.
Despite his father’s hesitancy, his parents decide to send Tyson to public school. Meanwhile, Tyson’s mother learns that she’s pregnant with another child. She doesn’t know how to feel about it, though, because her husband has always wanted a son who can play football.
Tyson is immediately bullied because he is autistic. However, many of the teachers and some of the students show him kindness. After class, he waits on the field for his father to finish football practice. He meets a runner on the track named Aklilu. Tyson’s father notices his son’s able to keep up with the runner for a lap or so.
Tyson begins to find a groove in school and is befriended by Aklilu, who agrees to teach him how to run. Tyson decides he wants to run in an upcoming marathon to prove he can be the son that his dad always wanted.
However, Tyson’s ambition gets him in some scary situations that could be the breaking point for his father. Will Tyson persevere and achieve his dream? Or, will the lack of faith from his father hold Tyson back?
