What You Need To Know:

In ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: THE SQUEAKQUEL, Alvin, Simon, and Theodore, the singing chipmunks, are left alone with their human cousin Toby when Alvin accidentally places Dave in the hospital. Toby packs them off to school for the first time, where they are bullied. Then, their former manager, Ian, finds three singing female chipmunks. Ian grooms them into becoming the Chipettes. He plans to upstage Alvin and his brothers and make the Chipettes the only musical stars in the chipmunk kingdom.

ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: THE SQUEAKQUEL is all about overcoming selfishness, the selfishness of Alvin and the selfishness of Ian. Even their cousin Toby, who’s supposed to take care of the chipmunks, has a problem in that area. The jeopardy in the movie is a little soft, however, until the very end when Ian decides that a professional concert in the city is more important than winning money for the school music program. Even so, the chipmunks are still fun to watch. One of the best parts is watching Alvin play high school football and dodge ball. And, the Chipettes are a very cute and adorable addition to the movie franchise.

Content:

(BB, CapCap, V, M) A strong moral worldview about acknowledging and overcoming selfishness, with strong pro-capitalist message about pursuing success in the musical world while helping others in need; no foul language, but some uses of the word “butt” and chipmunk gets dunked in toilet by human teenage bullies; very light slapstick violence such as large sign sends man flying and puts him in a body cast, woman’s wheelchair rolls down steps, balls hit chipmunks during dodge ball game at school, teenager hit with dodge ball during gym class, TV set broken, eagle menaces chipmunk, and chipmunks use toy helicopter to escape villain; no sex scenes, but some romance, such as male chipmunks get moony-eyed for girl chipmunks and young man and woman hug each other when man finally sees that she likes him; no nudity; no alcohol; no smoking; and, lying, selfishness rebuked, bullying, a offhanded joke is made about someone practicing pole dancing, and villain uses unoccupied apartment as his own by falsely getting girl chipmunk to unlock it for him.

More Detail:

Movie sequels often don’t measure up to the original. ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: THE SQUEAKQUEL is cute and funny, but it lacks the surprises of the first movie. Young viewers will enjoy the movie, but teenagers and adults may get a little bored at times.

The “squeekquel” picks up where the first movie left off. Dave Saville and his singing chipmunks, Alvin, Simon, and Theodore, are now performing concerts all over the world. At a charity concert in Paris, however, Alvin causes an accident that puts Dave in a body cast. Confined to the hospital, Dave sends the chipmunks back to Los Angeles, where his Aunt Jackie will pick them up and start sending them to school.

Aunt Jackie brings her clumsy, preoccupied adult nephew, Toby, to help her pick up the chipmunks. Toby forgets to put the brakes on her wheelchair, and Aunt Jackie also goes to the hospital. It’s now up to Toby to make sure the chipmunks get to their first day at high school.

At school, the chipmunks run into some bullies, who don’t like all the attention they get. Especially when the principal asks the chipmunks to win a singing contest, to get $25,000 for the school’s penniless music program.

Then, their old manager, Ian, discovers three adorable singing female chipmunks. He grooms the girl chipmunks into the Chipettes and sends them to the same school where Alvin, Simon, and Theodore go. He plans to upstage Alvin and his brothers and make the Chipettes the only musical stars in the chipmunk kingdom. His plan may very well succeed, because Alvin becomes more interested in being popular at school than singing with his brothers.
