Content:

(H, LLL, VVV, SSS, NN, PC, Ab) Humanism; 30 obscenities & 10 profanities; multiple grotesque murders presented as humorous, with assorted victims run over by car, impaled by fireplace poker, stabbed with scissors, bludgeoned, crushed, and set on fire; multiple views of crude horror on video; brief female nudity & pornography viewed in magazines & videos; sex & masturbation, exaggerated supposedly for comic effect; tasteless close-ups of a squashed fly, part of a victim's organ (apparently a liver), mucus sneezed in a baby's face, & a dental drilling without anesthetic; murderer becomes public heroine & goes free; and, deliberately mocking of prayer & church service.

Summary:

Filled with grotesqueries, violence and pornography, SERIAL MOM is arguably the most inept high-profile film in memory, a full-fledged, malodorous, mean-spirited dud. A very black comedy about a June Cleaver-style sitcom mom who is, in fact, a violent murderess. This movie desperately tries to be satiric, but instead, is relentlessly stupid, poorly written, badly acted, and deliberately tasteless. It also makes a special point to mock prayer and portray a suburban church as an assembly of fools.

Review:

SERIAL MOM is the most inept, high-profile film in memory, a full-fledged, malodorous, mean-spirited dud. Kathleen Turner as Beverly Sutphin, the perfect housewife with a very mean streak, mugs and scowls throughout the film in easily the worst performance of her career. With her immaculate housekeeping, cheerful mealtimes, well-coifed hair, and inane exhortations to her children, Chip and Misty, she is June Cleaver on amphetamines. The one joke throughout the movie is that beneath Beverly's sitcom veneer, she will enthusiastically "remove" anyone who violates her space, or tweaks anyone in her family. After Beverly kills several people through various means, she gets caught and defends herself in court where she trips up all of the brainless witnesses brought against her; she goes free to great public acclaim.

There are supposed to be clever observations about the media, the exploitation of criminals on TV talk shows and public hypocrisy. None of them work. There is also repeated mockery of prayer and church, and plenty of shots of horror movies, not to mention some particularly grotesque pornography videos. Also, there are close-ups of a squashed fly, a victim's liver, a wad of mucus sneezed in a baby's face, and a dental drilling without anesthetic. SERIAL MOM is one of the worst films of this or any other year.
