Summary:

HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH is a rock musical comedy about a cross-dressing homosexual singer from East Berlin who must confront his sexual and psychological demons to find his “true” identity. HEDWIG has a lively mix of songs and frequently lewd comedy, but, of course, the movie contains an abhorrent worldview, advocates sexual depravity, includes some anti-Christian elements, and has some strong foul language.

Review:

HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH aims high. It’s a homosexual rock opera and musical comedy that aims to get the kind of business that has made THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW such a successful cult movie.

Based on a popular off-Broadway play written by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask, the movie stars Mitchell as a young “man” from East Berlin who gets a botched sex change operation in order to marry an American G.I. Several years later or so, this cross-dressing, androgynous character forms a rock band with a teenage lover named Tommy, who is dubbed Tommy Gnosis (which is Greek for knowledge). Tommy, however, leaves him, steals his songs and becomes a huge rock star. Performing with his new homosexual lover and a new band in near-empty restaurants to bewildered diners and a few die-hard fans, he tells his life story through a collage of songs, flashbacks, animation, and one-liners. Circumstances eventually force him to confront his demons and decide how to meld the male and female portions of his personality.

As noted above, HEDWIG tries to mine territory opened up by THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW, another homosexual rock opera about cross-dressing. It has a lively mix of songs and frequently lewd comedy that will help it accomplish this goal, but this kind of material is designed for people who reject biblical truth and morality. In fact, the main song borrows a pagan creation myth from Plato that contradicts the biblical creation story. This song, THE ORIGIN OF LOVE, contends that, in the beginning, human beings were hermaphrodites, two sexes in one body, but then they split into two bodies, each body a different sex. Thus, love is a narcissistic urge to become whole again, to be both male and female.

Contrary to this, the Bible teaches that God is the origin of love, that true love does not rebel against God’s Law and that sexual love is meant for a married man and a woman whose differences complement each other. Thus, if parents discover that one of their children is confused about their sexual identity or is attracted to material like HEDWIG or ROCKY HORROR, they should take their child to the Christian counselor at their church. It may be that their child has been sexually assaulted by a homosexual, or by some other evil source, such as homosexual pornography on TV or at school. If so, there are laws still on the books in many cities which are meant to protect children from such crimes. In fact, a skillful lawyer should be able to use such laws to prevent children age 16 or 17 and under from getting into such movies even if their parents consent to it. Skillful lawyers are hard to find these days, however.
