More Detail:

The anti-Christian, Romantic and pagan notions of the New Age movement, and the moral corruption within many mainstream Christian denominations, have come home to roost in THE GURU, a splashy romantic comedy about sex from Universal.

British born actor Jimi Mistry stars in THE GURU as Ramu, a naïve young dance instructor from India who comes to New York City because he wants to be a star. The first acting job he lands, however, is a role in what turns out to be a porno movie. Ramu goes along with the job, he needs the work, but he’s too shy to perform his big scene, even though he gets advice from the beautiful blonde porn star, Sharrona, played by Heather Graham. Sharrona tells Ramu that God has made her body for sex. “The most powerful sexual organ is your brain,” she adds.

Later, Ramu and his Indian friend are helping to cater a fancy Park Avenue party featuring a real Hindu guru, but the guru passes out from drinking too much. The boss asks Ramu to take the guru’s place. Ramu agrees, at least it’s an acting job. Although he gets off to a slow start, Ramu hits it off with the crowd when he uses Sharrona’s views about God and sex. “God wants us to have sex,” says Ramu, who then leads the crowd in an elaborate song and dance straight out of Indian movies.

Ramu’s unique theology attracts Lexi, whose mother originally hired the guru to help her daughter, who’s depressed because she hasn’t found anything fulfilling to believe. Lexi, played by Marisa Tomei, is attracted to Ramu’s phony made-up religion and immediately invites him to her bed. She likes the uninhibited lifestyle that he promoted in his talk.

Soon, Lexi is helping Ramu spread his sexual New Age philosophy among all her high-roller acquaintances. She doesn’t know, however, that Ramu has asked Sharrona to provide him with more tips about sex so that he can become a big porn star. Sharrona helps Ramu, but she does not know that he just wants to use her ideas to make money from hawking a phony religion. Although Sharrona’s engaged to a jealous fireman, who doesn’t know she’s a porn star, she and Ramu start falling in love. Ramu imagines Sharrona singing the John Travolta, Olivia Newton John number from GREASE, “You’re the One that I Want,” with him. All this lying continues until the movie’s end, when all the truth is finally revealed.

When it’s not being lewd and crude, THE GURU has some very entertaining song and dance numbers. They play like a frothy combination of John Travolta musicals, especially GREASE, and Indian movies from Bollywood, the name for India’s movie industry. Jimi Mistry does a really good job as Ramu. Despite the sleazy aspects of his character, he manages to be very appealing on screen. Marisa Tomei is also good as the emotional Lexi. Heather Graham, however, needs to stick with her modeling career. She’s good for showing off the latest fashion, but not for much else, unless, of course, she takes some serious acting classes and finds better material.

The ultimate message in THE GURU’s Romantic worldview is “follow your heart wherever it takes you,” whether that’s pornography, sexual promiscuity, homosexual perversion, materialism, or even the asceticism that one character in the movie finds, which is the rejection of materialism. Romanticism is a cancer of the mind and of the heart that eventually devours all wisdom and all moral conscience.

THE GURU’s worldview is also politically correct. At the end of the movie, two characters come to accept their homosexuality, and everyone celebrates the multicultural American utopia of the religious left and New Age paganism. Of course, within this politically correct worldview, the worst thing you can be is a committed Christian, or even a committed Hindu. In fact, one scene of the movie suggests that the Roman Catholic priest who mentors Sharrona’s fiancé secretly watches some of Sharrona’s porn movies. Other lines from the movie incredibly contend that God approves of pornography. Thus, diversity only goes so far in some parts of Hollywood and some parts of America. Americans are dooming our children and our country to a life of unfulfilling hedonism and repressive, mind-numbing secularism by filling our screens with such politically-correct movies as THE GURU.
