THE SIMIAN LINE

What You Need To Know:

In THE SIMIAN LINE, Rick, a young artist in New Jersey, a ferryboat ride away from Manhattan, New York, lives with his middle-aged lover Katharine, a real estate agent. Rick invites Arnita, a fortuneteller, to a Halloween party in Katharine’s house. Joining the party are a middle-class married couple and a young rock guitarist and his singer girlfriend. Unknown to the couples, but not to Arnita, is the fact that the “ghost” of Katharine’s dead grandfather, Edward, stays in the house. Edward is upset because another ghost, a flapper named Mae, has joined him because the house next door is being renovated. Arnita proclaims suddenly, “One couple will be finished by the end of the year!” Initially dismissing her prediction, the couples begin to doubt their futures when things start going awry. One by one, they find themselves drawn into Arnita’s occult world. Meanwhile, Edward begins a tentative relationship with Mae even though he’s still pining for his wife, who left him for another man.

THE SIMIAN LINE is basically a Romantic story about love, but its strong occult themes are abhorrent. It also contains some strong foul language and treats sexual immorality too lightly.

Content:

(RoRo, OOO, LLL, S, NN, A, D, M) Solid Romantic worldview with strong pro-occult message, including psychic Tarot reader & ghosts; 42 obscenities (including more than 15 “f” words), 4 strong profanities & 8 mild profanities; no violence; implied fornication & cohabitation, plus ghost of dead man mentions his wife’s adultery; partial, brief male & female nudity; alcohol use; smoking; and, stealing & lying.

More Detail:

THE SIMIAN LINE gets its title from a palm-reader’s theory that there’s a line on some people’s hands, which shows that the person’s head often clashes with his heart. This is not the only occult connection in this movie. THE SIMIAN LINE also features a spiritualist who reads Tarot Cards as well as palms and who can converse with the “ghosts” of two dead people.

In the story of THE SIMIAN LINE, Harry Connick, Jr. plays Rick, a young artist in Weehawken, New Jersey, a ferryboat ride away from Manhattan, New York. Rick invites Arnita, a fortuneteller played by Tyne Daly of TV’s CHRISTY, to a Halloween party in the house where he lives with his middle-aged lover, Katharine, a real estate agent played by Lynn Redgrave. Joining the party are a middle-class married couple, played by Cindy Crawford and Jamey Sheridan, and a young rock guitarist and his singer girlfriend, played by Dylan Bruno and Monica Keena. Unknown to the couples, but not to Arnita, is the fact that the “ghost” of Katharine’s dead grandfather, Edward, stays in the house. Edward, played by William Hurt, is upset because another ghost, a youngish looking flapper named Mae (Samantha Mathis), has joined him because the house next door is being renovated.

Arnita becomes upset when she thinks people are ridiculing her. She’s also quite disconcerted because she can actually see the two ghosts. Angrily, Arnita proclaims suddenly, “One couple will be finished by the end of the year!” and promptly leaves the party. After initially dismissing this eccentric prediction, the couples begin to doubt their futures when things start going awry in their relationships. One by one, the characters find themselves drawn into Arnita’s occult world. Meanwhile, Edward begins a tentative relationship with Mae even though he’s still pining for his wife, who left him for another man when they were alive.

Too many characters spoil the narrative in THE SIMIAN LINE. The acting is merely serviceable. Although THE SIMIAN LINE is simply a Romantic story about love, its strong occult themes are abhorrent. People should turn to God and His Word, the Bible, to solve their relationship problems, not to some occult mumbo-jumbo from a misguided spiritualist. As Christ’s apostle, Paul, wrote in 2 Timothy 3:16, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.” THE SIMIAN LINE also contains some strong foul language and treats sexual immorality too lightly.
