Ex-NFL player and justice advocate Benjamin Watson is sharing how destructive sin is, with a promise of forgiveness for those who want it.

“’Sin will take you farther than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay, and cost you more than you want to pay,’” Watson shared in a social media post Dec. 11. “I had a friend that would always remind me that we are all one step from stupid.”

His father told him these words since he was young.

“We have an enemy that seeks to steal, kill and destroy while masquerading as an angel of light. He intends to destroy our families, our faith and our future,” Watson explained. “Too often we fail to realize that we are in a spiritual battle.”

“Every public moral failure should be a warning to us all,” he continued. “But for the grace of God there go I. Guard your heart, flee from evil, don’t forsake the assembly of the saints, lean into the Word.  And while we cannot control the consequences, always know that forgiveness is available for our transgressions.”

Watson posted this right after the University of Michigan announced its head coach, Sherrone Moore, was fired after the school discovered an “inappropriate relationship.” Shortly after, police arrested Moore and booked him in jail.

“When the findings of a University investigation into Coach Moore’s behavior were presented on Wednesday, we immediately terminated his employment,” University of Michigan interim president Domenico Grasso said in a statement. “There is absolutely no tolerance for this conduct at the University of Michigan. None.”

Moore is married and has three daughters.

Watson later shared some wisdom from his former coach, Mark Richt.

“My college head coach had a personal rule that he would never be alone with a woman, not even in an elevator,” he said. “Some people thought it was weird, unnecessary or overly pious. He considered it a guard for himself to honor his wife, his faith and his responsibility to everyone in the building.

“As a college athlete I didn’t fully understand. As a grown man, I get it. And I’m grateful.”

Earlier this year, Watson shared that God loves everyone despite their sins.

“it’s why He sent the Gospel,” he shared. “Our failures don’t cancel out God’s faithfulness. Sin may create distance between us and Him, but it cannot diminish His love for us.”

“In fact, the depth of our sin only magnifies the depth of His mercy. The gospel is God’s declaration that His love is stronger than our rebellion… The truth is, sin never stopped God’s love; it only proved how much we needed it.”
