Washington Commanders tight end Zach Ertz left the game on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings after a gruesome leg injury.
Several days after the injury, Ertz took to social media to share that he is “broken but never beaten” because of the hope he has in Jesus.
Ertz included a photo of the Bible verses Psalm 34:1-10, which read:
I will extol the Lord at all times;
his praise will always be on my lips.
2 I will glory in the Lord;
let the afflicted hear and rejoice.
3 Glorify the Lord with me;
let us exalt his name together.

4 I sought the Lord, and he answered me;
he delivered me from all my fears.
5 Those who look to him are radiant;
their faces are never covered with shame.
6 This poor man called, and the Lord heard him;
he saved him out of all his troubles.
7 The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him,
and he delivers them.8 Taste and see that the Lord is good;
blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.
9 Fear the Lord, you his holy people,
for those who fear him lack nothing.
10 The lions may grow weak and hungry,
but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.
The NFL reported on Monday that Ertz would end his season due to a torn ACL.
“Ertz had to be helped to the sideline and then was carted to the visitor’s locker room at U.S. Bank Stadium before he was ruled out for the remainder of the game,” the NFL reported.
Head Coach Dan Quinn “did not paint an optimistic picture regarding Ertz’s status, telling reporters after the loss that there was concern for the tight end’s ACL. Monday’s tests confirmed the initial fear,” the outlet continued.
“Tough news,” Quinn said of Ertz. “He has meant a lot to our team both on and off the field. He’s been an ideal teammate to help set a standard and about habits, and so we’re all bummed for him.”
Fellow teammate John Bates also said after the game, “It breaks my heart when you see a great one like him, an all-time great [get hurt]. He does everything the right way, the way things should be done. He’s just a pro’s pro.”
There is no timetable for Ertz’s return, but he is hopeful it will be by the start of next season. In the meantime, Ertz looks to continue to lean into his faith in Christ and be the best teammate he can be.
