THE POWERPUFF GIRLS MOVIE

What You Need To Know:

In THE POWERPUFF GIRLS MOVIE, moviegoers learn that the three little girls (Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup) are the result of a scientific experiment going wrong. Professor Utonium, a single man, tired of the lawlessness of evildoers and the lack of interest from the law enforcement community, decides to make the perfect little girl.

Humorously, he mixes sugar, spice, and everything nice. Regrettably, his lab chimp, Jojo, sensing something is very wrong, begins wrecking the laboratory, shoving the professor into a container of Secret Ingredient X that breaks and spills into the mix. An explosion occurs, hurling the scientist to the wall, rendering him unconscious. When he awakens there are three little bug-eyed girls with extraordinary powers! What he does not know is that Jojo has been splashed by the concoction and has mutated and escaped!

This is the first 30 seconds of every POWERPUFF GIRLS TV program stretched out into 15 minutes for the theatre audience. What remains is basically one 10-minute cartoon stretched and filled and fluffed to make 80 minutes. With humanistic and evolutionary tones, as well as frenetic cartoon violence, this boring movie gets a cautionary rating from MOVIEGUIDE®.

Content:

(HH, E, L, VV, M) Humanist worldview with the ingenuity of man and momentary decisions ruling with a secondary evolutionary worldview; mild but steady foul language (on the order of “butt”) and plenty of base body humor, including an ape that shoots bombs from its rear-end; graphic violence with people and creatures being pulled and beaten in every possible way; and, lying by evil foe and disrespect to authority.

More Detail:

Like a lot of “modern” cartoons made into feature length movies, you have to really like the cartoon in order to like the movie. Examples are THE FLINTSTONES, RECESS and SCOOBY-DOO. All of these features try to fill in the ignorant on basic facts and nomenclature but do nothing for the overall “view-ability” of the movie.

An explosion occurs, hurling the scientist to the wall, rendering him unconscious. When he awakens, there are three little bug-eyed girls with extraordinary powers! What he does not know is that Jojo has also been splashed by the concoction and has mutated and escaped!

The girls make enemies of the people of Townsville when they playfully wreck the city in a painfully long game of tag. They do not realize their strength, and they crash through buildings, tear up streets and wreak havoc everywhere. This ostracizes them with the populace and gets the Professor in big trouble. Saddened, they soon run into JoJo, who convinces them he is misunderstood too and that, as the brilliant Mojo Jojo, they can team up to make a machine that will make everyone love and adore them.

In reality, they create a machine that makes all the primates in the zoo as psychotic as Mojo Jojo! Soon the city is under siege from various Mojo Jojo wannabes that attack the people and vie to see who will rule the world. Lots of violence, explosions and screaming ensue. Eventually, the Powerpuff Girls wake up to their mistake, kill the mutant apes and return Mojo Jojo to his original state. The town loves them, and the Mayor commissions them to be the official defenders of Townsville.

My children were bored silly with this movie. You have to be a fan to really enjoy this film. Though the girls are cute, they are very violent and aggressive toward each other and the villains. This movie is rated PG for two reasons. First, the violence, which begins from the title sequence and continues until the last 40 seconds. Second, the filmmakers liberally use “butt” and have one well featured, mutant ape build a robot that shoots bombs from its rear end. Hence, this is not a movie for children younger than nine. Some ill-informed parents will see the cute merchandizing and mistakenly bring their little ones to the movie, without realizing it is a tongue-in-cheek parody of super hero cartoons.

Also on the downside is the very clear reference to the evolution of man by showing a spoof of the famous mural of the so-called evolution from apes to man in the primate section of the Townsville Zoo. The other sad comment was that policemen were shown to be apathetic and lazy by having them only eating donuts at a place with a sign that read, DoNUT THING, which clearly means, “Do Nothing.”

On the plus side, the animation has a stylized look that is pretty cool. There are plenty of adult-oriented jokes that are not racy, but do go over the children’s heads. The sound effects are good, though the music sounds like it was done on a Casio keyboard in someone’s garage. The people laughing the most at the screening were in their early 20’s.

THE POWERPUFF GIRLS MOVIE is a stretched out version of the TV cartoon. Though humorous in parts, it does not hold up well for the intended audience, and, because of poor choices made by the filmmakers, it demands a serious caution for children.
