If you’re going to remake a classic movie, the least thing you can do is to make sure that your remake at least aims for the wit and wisdom of the original. Jonathan Demme’s THE TRUTH ABOUT CHARLIE is a witless remake of Stanley Donen and Peter Stone’s stylish, exciting and funny CHARADE, starring the incomparable Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn and Walter Matthau. It lacks the charm not only of its progenitor, but also of its stars. The lesson? Hollywood ain’t what it used to be.
The new movie has updated the story a little bit. Instead of a stash of gold stolen by World War II soldiers, international soldiers from a secret mission in Bosnian are after money from some stolen diamonds. They think the money has been hidden somewhere by their old comrade, Charlie Lambert, who has suddenly turned up dead in France. They think Charlie’s beautiful young widow, Regina or Reggie, has the money. The problem is, all Charlie has left Reggie is a bag of junk. Apparently, he put all the money from the diamonds into their apartment, but has suddenly sold all their things while Reggie was out of the country. So, the question remains, where is the money?
Helping to protect Reggie from these soldiers is a mysterious stranger, who calls himself Peter Joshua. Peter is not who he seems to be, however. Complicating matters is another mysterious man, who claims he is a government agent from the United States trying to get back the money that the soldiers stole. Reggie has to figure out for herself who she can trust.
THE TRUTH ABOUT CHARLIE is shot in a mystifying, overly complicated, tiring manner. The camerawork is among the worst ever. In fact, the camerawork and editing are so choppy that the actors have been left with very little to work with in 75 percent of the scenes. Furthermore, except for the movie’s final climactic scene, which has some positive moral connotations, the other few action scenes are uninspired and boring. Finally, although the filmmakers have tried for the quirky humor of the French New Wave movies of the late 1950s and early 1960s, the humor here falls flat.
THE TRUTH ABOUT CHARLIE is truly one of the worst movies from a major studio this year. Although it abstains from contemporary vulgarities, it contains some sexual situations and nudity. The filmmakers also fail to capitalize fully on the story’s brief moral connotations.
