More Detail:

The unrated, dark comedy SPANKING THE MONKEY received the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Produced on a budget of only $80,000 and using no well-known actors, this film’s humorous elements are far outweighed by the darkness of the sin it portrays and condones. Ray is a pre-med student intending to spend only a few days at home before proceeding to his summer internship. His plans are canceled, and he is forced to stay at home to care for his mother who has just broken her leg. His father, off on a critical business trip and too strapped for money to hire a nurse, leaves Ray with his mother in their large, suburban home. The relationship between mother and son becomes increasingly suggestive, finally culminating in drunkenness and incest.

Ostensibly about incest, the film merely portrays the darkness of sin while offering no hope or redemption from it. The incest, though not condoned, is used for shock value. Foul language, sex, nudity, and substance abuse permeate the film. SPANKING THE MONKEY can be viewed as a graphic statement about the sinful lives people lead and the problems which result when unrepentant sin goes unchecked.
