ENLIGHTENMENT GUARANTEED

What You Need To Know:

ENLIGHTENMENT GUARANTEED is a German movie about two brothers, Uwe and Gustav. When Uwe’s wife abruptly leaves him, he begs Gustav to take him on Gustav’s trip to Japan. Gustav is a Buddhist and plans to stay several weeks at a monastery there. After losing their hotel and money in expensive Tokyo, the brothers find themselves on the streets. Eventually, they find their way to the monastery. Uwe takes to the rigors of the Buddhist life better than the chubby Gustav. This results in conflict, which is resolved through brotherly love and the positive effect of Buddhism on Uwe.

ENLIGHTENMENT GUARANTEED provides an interesting, revealing look at the daily life inside a Buddhist monastery, but it does not provide much insight into Buddhist philosophy beyond a few catch-phrases. Familiarity with Buddhist concepts might add to one’s enjoyment. ENLIGHTENMENT GUARANTEED is a gentle comedy which contains some fine performances, but the movie is a validation of Buddhism, a philosophy that has led many people away from God’s truth, goodness, justice, and love. The movie, which contains brief full nudity at a male spa, also accepts homosexuality as natural and shows Uwe stealing a tent from a store.
