GOODBYE SOLO is a painfully slow story of a young taxi driver attempting to save the life of an elderly suicidal client. The movie opens with William trying to make arrangements with Solo, a young cab driver from Africa, to take him to the top of a high mountain on a particular day in the near future. Solo realizes that William intends to kill himself. Solo tries to befriend William and talk him out of his plans. Meanwhile, William does his best to remain depressed and mysterious.
GOODBYE SOLO is loaded with vulgarity and devoid of faith and hope. This is not entertainment. It’s punishment. For 91 minutes, you get to see an old depressed man prepare to take his own life. Jesus Christ came to bring hope to the hopeless. He came to set the captives free. Depression is a work of the devil that pulls its victims to hell. Jesus Christ came to provide forgiveness, set mankind free from sin, and provide peace and joy. The critics who loved this movie must be content to settle for depression. Don’t be. With God’s help, you can get victory over depression.

The movie opens with William (Red West) trying to make arrangements with Solo (Souleymane Sy Savane), a young cab driver from Africa, to take him to the top of a high mountain on a particular day in the near future. Solo sees quickly that William intends to kill himself. Solo tries valiantly to befriend William and talk him out of his plans while William does his best to remain depressed and mysterious.
The fact that this movie was so greatly appreciated by some well known movie reviewers speaks volumes about our warped society. This is not entertainment. It’s punishment. It’s worse than watching paint dry. For 91 minutes, you get to see an old depressed man prepare to take his own life.

The greatest flaw in this movie is that it presents a worldview in which a bases his most important decisions in life on his own reasons for living. This assumes we exist on this earth to live for our own gratification, and we can end our lives if our hope for more gratification runs out. The truth is we are here for God’s purposes. When God is finished with us here He will welcome us into eternity. We are not here to live or die for selfish reasons.
