44 INCH CHEST

What You Need To Know:

44 INCH CHEST is a dark comedy about a middle aged man, Colin, who is left by his wife for another man. Colin and his buddies decide to kidnap the boyfriend and kill him. The men joke and talk while waiting for Colin to kill the young man. Eventually, Colin decides not to kill him.

44 INCH CHEST can’t decide whether it is a drama or dark comedy. The acting is top notch as the ensemble cast carries on conversations about life, work and sex while waiting on Colin to kill the boyfriend. The script is well written as it unfolds the story of what happened bit by bit. There is vulgar language and graphic discussion of sex. One of the men is a homosexual who describes relationships in graphic terms. While the violence is not graphic, it is emotionally charged when Colin pushes his wife around. Colin gives a positive speech to the boyfriend about love and marriage. Telling him they are eternal and come with good times and bad times. Colin does not kill the young man, but this moral outcome is undermined by the movie’s immoral, excessive vulgar content.

More Detail:

44 INCH CHEST is a dark comedy about a middle aged man, Colin, who is left by his wife for another man and decides with his buddies to kidnap the boyfriend and kill him.

This story is told by moving back and forth in flashback and even with a fantasy segment. Colin’s wife tells him she’s leaving him for another man. Colin pushes her and hits her, and she runs away. Colin trashes his house and passes out from rage and drunkenness. Four of his friends come to his aid by kidnapping the wife’s boyfriend and holding him in an abandoned apartment so that Colin can kill him.

The men joke and talk while waiting for Colin to kill the young man. Eventually, Colin decides not to kill him. It’s not clear why. Either Colin has sobered up or perhaps it was Colin remembering how he hit his wife he just had a change of heart.

44 INCH CHEST can’t decide whether it’s a drama or dark comedy. There are humorous scenes as well as dramatic ones but the humor is always dark, typically about killing the younger man.

The acting is top notch as the ensemble cast carries on conversations about life, work and sex while waiting on Colin to kill the boyfriend. The script is well written, unfolding the story of what happened bit by bit. The music soundtrack is very well done with a terrific score and music direction of well known songs, such as “I Can’t Live If Living Is Without You” as Colin lays on the ground after his wife has just left him.

There is much vulgar language and graphic discussion of sex in 44 INCH CHEST. Also, one of the men is a homosexual and describes sex in graphic terms. While the violence is not graphic, it is emotionally charged, as when Colin pushes his wife around.

Colin does give a positive speech to the boyfriend about love, telling him that marriage is for always and comes with good times and bad times. Also, one of the men tells the biblical story of Samson and Delilah, and the Cecil B. DeMille’s 1949 movie is intercut as he narrates.

Colin ultimately does not kill the young man, but this moral outcome is undermined by the movie’s immoral, excessive vulgar content.
