In the dumb titled movie RELAX…IT’S JUST SEX, a group of friends in Southern California navigate hopelessly through homosexual and straight relationships, searching for significance but finding placebos and disease…i.e. AIDS. Tara Ricotto (Jennifer Tilly) tries to conceive with her bickering husband, homosexual Vincey gets assaulted and fights back, and lesbians Robin (Lori Petty) and Megan (Serena Scott-Thomas) momentarily find a sense of peace while recovering from hurt past relationships.
RELAX….IT’S JUST SEX is a double edged sword, where both edges yield danger, though one edge could yield valid discussion. On one edge, it is filled with homosexual sex, lesbian sex, straight sex, and more. It even mocks the moral viewer from the get-go with a pseudo “training film” primer to “ease” the minds of homophobes towards watching homosexual sexual encounters. For that alone, the movie represents a terrible, voyeuristic mess.
Yet, the movie differs from many politically correct homosexual films in that it raises several very important social and moral topics that could have large ranging ramifications. One, homosexual Vincey (Mitchell Anderson) is assaulted by a group of thugs. He corners one of the weaker members and rapes him. The question arises, “Do we excuse retributive violence as appropriate justice?” It is a question raised in the Bible to which Jesus answers, “No.” Secondly, Diego Tellez (Chris Cleveland) challenges conventional medical wisdom in stating that the HIV virus does not cause AIDS, and AIDS is caused by something else.
The lesson that RELAX…IT’S JUST SEX ultimately teaches is that those without a moral compass (or a Savior) are doomed to repeat a pattern of sin. Homosexual behavior, or hyper-sexual behavior merely reflects a heart attitude of a person who doesn’t know his Creator, doesn’t know his Creator’s love and doesn’t know his Creator’s solution to the problem of sin, which abounds unrelentingly in the world today.
A movie such as this can be recognized for its honesty: sin unchecked yields misery and disease, but it can offer no solution. Furthermore, the movie depicts a supposedly well-adjusted Church going homosexual couple, who wrestle not with the Bible’s condemnation of homosexual behavior. RELAX…IT’S JUST SEX is nothing about relaxing, a lot about tensing and everything about being out of control.
