Our Comic-Con Panel Predictions!

What panels at the ‘con’ will have the best family content? If you’re traveling to San Diego this weekend for the conference, what panels should you definitely make sure and see?

We’ve compiled a list of some of the panels that look the most uplifting and family-friendly. Read on below for superheroes, Christian authors and animation highlights galore!

Thursday Panels

DreamWorks Animation Filmmaker Focus Panel

Last year’s DreamWorks panel premiered footage of THE CROODS and featured director Tom McGrath (MADACASCAR series), production designer Patrick Hanenberger (RISE OF THE GUARDIANS), animator James Baxter (THE CROODS), and DreamWorks chief creative officer Bill Damashke.

This year will again see Bill Damashke headline the panel with directors David Soren (TURBO), Rob Minkoff (PEABODY & SHERMAN) and Dean DeBlois (HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2). We’re expecting to see footage of HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2, and at least one other from this list of upcoming DreamWorks movies, <http://screenrant.com/dreamworks-animation-lineup-2013-2016/all/1/>.

Summit Films Panel: Ender’s Game and Divergent

Summit is currently turning both these futuristic books into movies, and the star-studded panels will be sure to premiere footage from both films, and present a wealth of anecdotes and photo moments. The most interesting thing about both these books is that they come from conservative family authors.

ENDER’S GAME is now a classic of modern children/teen lit, written by Orson Scott Card decades ago. If you’ve been keeping up, however, Lionsgate has released a statement separating itself and the movie from Card’s religious beliefs. As a Mormon, Orson Scott Card has taken a strong stance against same sex marriage [sic]. Card will not be at Comic-Con, but his bravery in standing for his beliefs is commendable.

DIVERGENT is a new book, written by Christian author Veronica Roth. The book, while not overtly Christian, does mention God and prayer, especially in times of need. Movieguide® is interested to see the direction the movie takes. We hope it will not end up being just another “Hunger Games,” with bloody children-on-children fighting. IF the filmmakers keep the Christian content in the movie, and IF it concentrates more on the virtues and lessons in the book and not the battles, this could be a great movie.

Friday Panels

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Movieguide® tends to like most of what Marvel does. The lessons of standing for what’s right in the face of adversity, sacrifice, and teamwork all resonate for family audiences. If Marvel goes the same direction with its much-hyped TV show on ABC, it will be a much-needed addition to what is currently a pretty murky television landscape.

Sony & Screen Gems

CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2 and THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 are our main destinations for this panel. The first MEATBALLS was a fantastic father-son movie, with a redemptive story. 2012’s AMAZING SPIDER-MAN had some fantastic moments between Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) and Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen), and we’re excited to see what the storyline holds for the sequel.

Saturday Panels

Once Upon a Time in Wonderland & Once Upon a Time Panels

Movieguide® will be taking a deeper look into the fairytales of childhood at the panels of ABC’s hit series ONCE UPON A TIME and the new spinoff, ONCE UPON A TIME IN WONDERLAND. While we haven’t officially reviewed the new show yet, we’ve been hearing good things about themes of good versus evil, family, doing the right thing, and the bad effects of magic.

Warner Brothers & DC Entertainment Present Superman’s 75th Anniversary Celebration!

If you’re at Comic-Con and want to celebrate with the MAN OF STEEL, this is the panel for you! 2013 marks the 75th anniversary of Superman, and there will be stars from all the past Superman movies (including 2013’s MAN OF STEEL) to talk about the legend at this panel.

Marvel Studio:

The Marvel Panel will officially be home to the stars and crew of THOR:  THE DARK WORLD and CAPTAIN AMERICA:  THE WINTER SOLDIER, and you can bet there will be many additional surprises from the rest of the Marvel Universe.

Finally, don’t forget to visit www.movieguide.org daily for the latest redemptive reports from Comic-Con 2013. Only Movieguide® gives you the best pro-family, pro-faith perspective with the highest biblical standards.
