PITCH PERFECT 2 has many more laughs than its predecesso and the musical numbers and a cappella mash-ups are even more extravagant. If that’s all that makes a movie great, then it would be set. This isn’t the case, however. Logical plot points are thrown out the window, and character development is replaced with gags. The vulgar language, crude jokes and innuendos reflect a lawless worldview. The movie has a slight moral theme in the sense that the Bellas must learn to come together as a team. Otherwise, PITCH PERFECT 2 isn’t anything worth singing about.

The unnecessary sequel PITCH PERFECT 2 brings back the Barden Bellas in full a cappella glory.
Having won the a cappella competition at Barden University, the beloved musical group is on a dream tour. However, things go horribly wrong when Fat Amy (a self-prescribed name) has an embarrassing “incident” while performing a concert with President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama in attendance. The Barden Bellas are shamed by the media, so the school is forced to pull them from their tour and replace them with a German a cappella group called Das Sound Machine. Barred from representing the school, the only way they can win back their status is if they win the World A Cappella Championship in Copenhagen, which an American team has never done.
Meanwhile, Becca, the group’s core member, is thinking about life outside of college. In fact, she’s secretly started an internship working for an eccentric music producer. Becca keeps the internship a secret because she doesn’t want any of the other Bellas to know, especially Chloe, that she’s putting energy into anything other than the group. The Bells bring in a new freshman member, Emily (Hailee Steinfeld), who’s mother was a legendary Bella member. One mishap and mistake after another leaves the group hopeless. So, now, they must find their vocal harmony as a group so they can save the Bellas from total ruin.

The goal is set up at the beginning, but there’s hardly any explanation of the rules of the a cappella competition. Logical plot points are thrown out the window, and real character exploration and development are replaced with gags. Hailee Steinfeld is charming, but doesn’t serve much purpose, other than being awkwardly pursued by another student. Ultimately, there’s no emotional conflict and little jeopardy. This results in a dazzling, but empty, climax.
The vulgar language, crude jokes and sexual innuendos in PITCH PERFECT 2 reflect a lawless pagan worldview. There’s a touch of moral themes in the sense that the Bella’s must learn to come together as a team. They also honor the legacy of past Bella members. Otherwise, PITCH PERFECT 2 isn’t anything worth singing about.
