AMY

"Great Talent Lost Early"

What You Need To Know:

AMY, a documentary, tells pop singer Amy Winehouse’s life, which was cut short at the age of 27. It presents glimpses from her childhood, her music career, her disturbed romantic relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil, the scandalous media attention, and her demise because of drug and alcohol addiction. AMY contains a large amount of interviews from Winehouse’s close family and friends. The singer in her own words essentially tells her own narrative of her life and music career.

Furthermore, although AMY is an interesting, well-made documentary, sadly, its dominant worldview of paganism is disappointing and discouraging. It is undeniably evident that Amy Winehouse idolized love, mainly from men. This unhealthy worship of love, especially from Blake Fielder-Civil, whom she had an affair with and later married, leads her to heavily depend on alcohol and drugs to satisfy an unfulfilled void in her life. Sadly, this satisfaction for love is never found because it is never found in God. In addition, due to strong foul language, implied sexual immorality, implied drug use, and scenes depicting alcohol use and drunkenness, adult viewership is highly advised.

Content:

(PaPaPa, LLL, S, N, AAA, DDD, MM) Very strong pagan worldview, with the protagonist’s idolatry of love, music, drugs, and alcohol at the center of the narrative; no other worldview elements or content supporting or not supporting the dominant worldview; 28 obscenities and profanities, mainly “f” words; no violence; sexual immorality; light naturalistic nudity, with a few scenes showing upper male nudity and half naked women in bathing suits; very strong alcohol use and drunkenness, with the narrative constantly presenting the protagonist’s dependency on alcohol, so there are a lot of scenes depicting that reality; heavy smoking and illegal drug use, with several scenes showing the protagonist and her husband smoking cigarettes, the movie constantly mentioning drugs and implying drug use, and footage showing the protagonist carrying a bag of marijuana; and, strong miscellaneous immorality, with several scenes presenting moral relativism as the protagonist engages in implied drug use and sexual immorality, leading to her being a bad role model, and the movie presents greed when the protagonist’s father exploits his daughter’s fame for money and celebrity, which leads to a depiction of dysfunctional family portrayals.

More Detail:

AMY is a documentary that tells the story of pop singer Amy Winehouse, from just before her professional music career began until her early tragic death, featuring never before seen archival footage and never before heard music.

The movie tells Amy Winehouse’s life, which was cut short at the age of 27. It presents glimpses from her childhood, to her music career, her disturbed romantic relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil, the scandalous media attention, and her demise because of drug and alcohol addiction. AMY contains a large amount of interviews from Winehouse’s close family and friends. Essentially, the singer also tells her own narrative of her life and music career in her own words.

AMY is a well-made documentary. The story is fascinating, helping make sense of the tragic life of Amy Winehouse. It helps the viewing audience comprehend her life and music. The narrative also produces an emotional catharsis, mainly of sadness, however.

The documentary’s quality is enhanced by the fact that the actual footage of the conducted interviews of close family and friends are never presented – only sound. This leaves the focus on Winehouse so that she could tell her own story. The movie punctuates her story with several of Winehouse’s songs that link directly to whatever is happening in her life.

Furthermore, although AMY is an exceptionally well-made documentary, sadly, its dominant worldview of paganism is discouraging. Sadly, this satisfaction for love is never found, because it is never fulfilled by finding God.

Overall, AMY promotes paganism as its dominant worldview. In addition, due to strong foul language, implied sexual immorality, implied drug use, and scenes depicting alcohol use and drunkenness, adult viewership is highly advised.
