AMY is a documentary that tells the story of pop singer Amy Winehouse, from just before her professional music career began until her early tragic death, featuring never before seen archival footage and never before heard music.
The movie tells Amy Winehouse’s life, which was cut short at the age of 27. It presents glimpses from her childhood, to her music career, her disturbed romantic relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil, the scandalous media attention, and her demise because of drug and alcohol addiction. AMY contains a large amount of interviews from Winehouse’s close family and friends. Essentially, the singer also tells her own narrative of her life and music career in her own words.
AMY is a well-made documentary. The story is fascinating, helping make sense of the tragic life of Amy Winehouse. It helps the viewing audience comprehend her life and music. The narrative also produces an emotional catharsis, mainly of sadness, however.
The documentary’s quality is enhanced by the fact that the actual footage of the conducted interviews of close family and friends are never presented – only sound. This leaves the focus on Winehouse so that she could tell her own story. The movie punctuates her story with several of Winehouse’s songs that link directly to whatever is happening in her life.
