BEAST

What You Need To Know:

BEAST is a psychological thriller from Britain, set on the island of Jersey. Moll is a young woman who has a strained relationship with her mother because of a violent incident from high school years ago. Moll meets a young man named Pascal who seems to care about her. Her mother’s overly critical, harsh demeanor drives Moll to live with Pascal at the family cottage he inherited. Moll’s dreams of household bliss are interrupted when Pascal is suddenly arrested for several brutal murders of local teenage girls. Is he really capable of doing such a thing?

BEAST moves a bit slowly at times. It’s not just a thriller; it’s also a character study. However, the filmmakers set up the story’s suspense very well, especially the did he or didn’t he theme in the movie’s second half. Eventually, Moll has to make things right and bring the real killer to justice. Sadly, though, the ending falls apart because of a melodramatic, violent conclusion. BEAST also has strong foul language and a couple explicit bedroom scenes between the two lovers. Extreme caution is advised.

More Detail:

BEAST is a British psychological thriller set on the island of Jersey between Normandy and England. A young woman flees from the strained comforts of her family home into the loving arms of a young man who’s suddenly arrested for a series of brutal murders. The did he or didn’t he nature of the plot leads to some suspenseful moments, but BEAST falls apart at the end into violent melodrama and has strong foul language and a couple explicit bedroom scenes.

The movie opens at the birthday party of a young redhead named Moll. Her family rudely starts to ignore her when her older brother announces his wife’s pregnant. So, Moll leaves in a huff and walks to a nightclub to dance. There, she hooks up with a young man, and the two wind up wandering near the beach in the morning. When the man tries to take advantage of the situation, Moll starts to fend him off, but he won’t take no for an answer. Moll is rescued by another young man, Pascal, who’s illegally been hunting rabbits and is heading for home.

Pascal and Moll start a romance, but Moll’s mother doesn’t trust Moll because of a violent incident Moll caused at high school several years back. Making matters worse, Moll’s mother doesn’t like Pascal at all, even though he now owns his family’s local cottage. So, Moll leaves home to live with Pascal, and their affair starts to heat up. Indeed, Pascal seems like a really nice guy who treats her well.

However, one day, the police arrest Pascal for a series of brutal murders of teenage girls. The body of the last girl who went missing has finally been recovered. Also, the girl disappeared the night of Moll’s birthday party, before she met Pascal the next morning.

Sadly, Moll lies to the police and says it was Pascal she met at the bar. However, the police soon retrieve a cellphone photo showing that Moll wasn’t with Pascal at the bar that night.

Could Pascal really have committed these brutal murders? Pascal maintains his innocence, and Moll sticks by him, but maybe she’s wrong.

Ultimately, BEAST seems to assert that everybody has a beast inside them. That not only includes the two lovers. It also includes Moll’s mother, an older female detective who mercilessly and rudely interrogates Moll, and the policeman investigating the murders who has his own lover’s crush on Moll. In the end, however, Moll must decide to do the right thing. Her solution is a bit violent, but at least the real killer is exposed and punished.
