Dolly Parton to Make New TV Series on Netflix

Dolly Parton to Make New TV Series on Netflix

By Ashley Hancock, Contributing Writer

Country music icon Dolly Parton is taking her music to Netflix. After NBC produced two TV movies about Dolly Parton’s songs and childhood, Netflix reached a deal to turn more of her music into TV episodes. The series will be an eight-episode scripted anthology, and each episode will be based on a song by the country music singer-songwriter.

Parton will serve as the executive producer and will also appear in the series and will be produced by Parton’s Dixie Pixie Productions and Sam Haskell’s Magnolia Hill Entertainment in association with Warner Bros. Television.

“As a songwriter, I have always enjoyed telling stories through my music,” Parton said. “I am thrilled to be bringing some of my favorite songs to life with Netflix. We hope our show will inspire and entertain families and folks of all generations, and I want to thank the good folks at Netflix and Warner Bros. TV for their incredible support.”

Movieguide® hopes the series will do just that.

Dolly’s two NBC TV movies each won the coveted Epiphany Prize for Most Inspiring TV Program at MOVIEGUIDE®’s Faith & Values Awards two years in a row.

COAT OF MANY COLORS, which was based on Parton’s hit song, was the first of the two TV movies, launching in December 2015. The movie drew about 15.9 million viewers over seven days. The sequel, CHRISTMAS OF MANY COLORS:  CIRCLE OF LOVE, debuted a year later and also was extremely successful, with a total of 15.7 million viewers over only two days.

Parton is no stranger behind the camera. Aside from her many different features in movies, Dolly has also been in numerous television programs, including her own show DOLLY. Now, she is taking over the streaming world with her new anthology series.

During her career, the country legend has had 41 albums that have reached the top 10 on the country charts as well as 25 certified gold, platinum, or multiplatinum. Not only that, but she’s also a two-time Oscar nominee for her original music, including “9-5” and “Travelin’ Thru.”

The premiere date and series title for the new Netflix program have not yet been released.
