While she shared her thoughts on the assassination of Charlie Kirk last week, FREAKY FRIDAY actress Jamie Lee Curtis began to get emotional as she defended the Turning Point USA founder.

“I’m going to bring something up with you just because it’s front of mind,” Curtis said on the “WTF with Marc Maron” podcast. “I disagreed with him on almost every point I ever heard him say, but I believe he was a man of faith, and I hope in that moment when he died, that he felt connected with his faith. Even though his ideas were abhorrent to me. I still believe he’s a father and a husband and a man of faith. And I hope whatever connection to God means that he felt it.”

“Yesterday was 9/11. I know there is video of his assassination. I know people who’ve seen it,” she added. “Yesterday [on 9/11], we watched again these images of those buildings coming down…Today, we as a society are bombarded with imagery. So we don’t know what the longitudinal effects of seeing those towers come down over and over and over and over again, or watching his execution over and over and over again…I don’t ever want to see this footage of this man being shot.”

Because of the violence so often posted on social media and promoted in movies and TV shows, many are desensitized to what real-life violence actually means.

“Is that the reason why we’re all feeling this lack of humanity, because we’re just saturated with these images?” Curtis asked.

Kirk was assassinated on Sept. 10 while hosting a Q&A event at Utah Valley University. He leaves behind his wife, Erika, and two children.

Curtis isn’t the only one who disagreed with Kirk but still took a moment to share their thoughts on the tragedy.

Former president Barack Obama said, “We don’t yet know what motivated the person who shot and killed Charlie Kirk, but this kind of despicable violence has no place in our democracy. Michelle and I will be praying for Charlie’s family tonight, especially his wife Erika and their two young children.”

Jimmy Kimmel also shared, “Instead of the angry finger-pointing, can we just for one day agree that it is horrible and monstrous to shoot another human? On behalf of my family, we send love to the Kirks and to all the children, parents and innocents who fall victim to senseless gun violence.”

Even though Curtis and many others didn’t agree with what Kirk believed and said, they still found it in their hearts to have sympathy for him and his family amid the senseless tragedy. Our nation needs more sympathy when tragedies occur; instead, social media is desensitizing humans to not feel anything or even feel hatred for those who believe differently from us.
