Last weekend’s Emmy Awards saw a four-year high in viewership with family-friendly comedian Nate Bargatze as the host.

“It’s a huge honor to be asked to host such an iconic awards show and I’m beyond excited to work with CBS to create a night that can be enjoyed by families around the world,” Bargatze said in April when the gig was first announced. “I’ve got to do just me in that world.”

Making Bargatze the face of the awards certainly paid off for CBS as it saw the award show enjoy an 8% rise in viewership, bringing in a total of 7.4 million viewers. More than ever, these viewers came from streaming as Paramount+ viewership was up 76% from the last time CBS hosted the event in 2021.

The success of this year’s show, despite many of those up for awards not being particularly family-friendly, is yet another example that proves that clean comedy has massive staying power in the industry. This, however, is already evident from the fact that Bargatze is the most popular comedian in the world, beating out legendary names that have been in the business for decades.

“I love that people when they come to my show…I don’t wanna betray that trust,” Bargatze said about families coming to his shows without any worries. “You can have your kid watch my stand-up and you don’t like, if you see them have it on, you don’t have to be like, ‘Whoa, what’s going on.’”

Growing up in a Christian home and remaining strong in his faith today, Bargatze’s desire to be family-friendly comes largely from a desire to serve the Lord well. Though he rarely talks explicitly about his faith, it certainly drives everything in his career.

“I am second to God. Second to your family, second to the audience, second to everybody,” he told the New York Times. “You live to serve, so it‘s very much a calling in that aspect. I just want to make something where all of them can be in the room together. It‘s driven by a bigger purpose for me, but everybody has their own things.”

Now that he has risen to the very top of stand-up comedy, Bargatze has no plans of slowing down as he transitions to other areas of the entertainment industry. His first movie THE BREADWINNER is set to release next March, and he even has plans to open his own amusement park sometime in the future.
