Clean comedian Nate Bargatze says his dedication to family-friendly comedy is a calling from “beyond” himself.
“I love that people when they come to my show…I don’t wanna betray that trust,” he said during an interview with CBS NEWS SUNDAY MORNING. “You can have your kid watch my stand-up and you don’t like, if you see them have it on, you don’t have to be like, ‘Whoa, what’s going on?'”
Bargatze continued, “You feel like you’re being asked to do this and the career that I have. And so, you just got to trust that your path is going to be the path, and just stick with it.”
When asked if he felt like his work as a clean comedian is a calling, Bargatze replied, “Yeah. You know — I feel it’s beyond me.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Bargatze opened up about his decision to stop drinking early on in his career.
“I could tell I was not going to get where I wanted to go [if I kept drinking],” he explained. “I wasn’t the best at having control of it…I’m not the best at stopping myself and having a reasonable relationship with it. I mean, if I wanted to go where I needed to go…this is in my way.”
Bargatze’s hard work paid off — he was the highest-grossing comedian in America last year and has a slew of projects in the works, from a movie that he wrote and will star in to the development of a theme park and cruise line. Now, he’s set to host this year’s Emmy Awards ceremony.
“You kind of dream of hosting some kind of award show,” he told CBS. “It’s very flattering to even get asked to do it.”
Bargatze added, “I’m used to performing in front of live people, not an audience like this of all the people that you know. So, it will be fun to get in there, get on stage, get that first joke, hear that first laugh and then just get running and just really make your own of it.”
The comedian has also been open about his Christian faith and how it influenced him to step away from inappropriate humor, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “As a Christian, I feel very much called in what I do.”
Bargatze’s skyrocketing career is proof that holding on to your set of morals will pay off in the long run — and earn you millions of likeminded fans.
