SHIFTING GEARS Season 2 is almost here!

The series, starring the legendary Tim Allen as Matt, wrapped up its first season last spring. A logline for the show reads, “A stubborn man’s estranged daughter and her kids move into his house.”

Season 2 will premiere on Oct. 1 on ABC, with three very special guest appearances: Allen’s former HOME IMPROVEMENT co-stars Patricia Richardson, Richard Karn and Debbe Dunning. Their role in the season premiere hasn’t been announced yet.

Season 1 ended with several cliffhangers. Most notably, Riley officially divorces her husband, Jimmy, and begins exploring who she is outside that relationship. That episode aired March 19.

Allen announced the show’s renewal in an Instagram post in April.

“Well well well….. Back to work,” he captioned the post.

Fans in the comment section expressed excitement. “👏👏👏 Yayyy !!! One of the few new shows that are worth watching!! Not forcing agendas etc just a feel good show but with real life too, esp the grief of losing his wife,” one user said. Another person added, “Awesome! I’ve really been enjoying this show!”

Movieguide®’s Season 1, episode 4 review gave the show a +1 content score. Part of the review reads, “The episode teaches strong biblical values, emphasizing family and how it can help us heal and grow. Furthermore, multiple scenes prominently feature a cross in the background.”

It adds, “There is mild foul language and one reference to false religion; thus, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children and teens.”

SHIFTING GEARS marks Tim Allen’s third sitcom over his decades long career. He began his first sitcom career as Tim “The Toolman” Taylor in HOME IMPROVEMENT, which aired from 1991 to 1999. After that, he starred as Mike Baxter in LAST MAN STANDING from 2011 to 2021. SHIFTING GEARS premiered in January of this year.

For him, his sitcom roles reflect parts of who he was and is, especially his role as Matt.

“So this new guy now, Matt Parker, he’s more of what I really am,” Allen told USA Today. “I was a design and philosophy student like he is. Now, he’s curmudgeonly because he’s been through grief, and I lost my father as a young kid, so I get that. I also have a car shop. So he’s the most relatable to the stand-up I’ve been doing for years and truly an evolution of all these characters.”

Maxwell Simpkins, who plays Carter on SHIFTING GEARS, previously said that the show is special because is displays a caring family: “One of the best parts of a family is when they care so much. That’s an element I feel Tim brings to his character Matt — he cares so much, but he doesn’t know how to display it when Riley is talking about tracking and other things he can’t relate to.”

Tune in on Oct. 1 on ABC to watch the newest season of SHIFTING GEARS.
