Actor Chris Pratt Accepts an MTV Award, But Not Without Talking About God First

By Ben Kayser, Managing Editor

At the MTV Awards which aired June 18th, Chris Pratt accepted the Generation Award. In his speech, he shared “The 9 Rules of Chris Pratt,” which included some funny tips, silly potty humor, but mostly, spiritual advice. Pratt, who is very vocal about his Christian faith on social media and in interviews began his rules by telling the young crowd, “You have a soul. Be careful with it.”

He continued to advise the audience to be kind to each other, stating, “If you are strong, be a protector. If you are smart, be a humble influencer. Strength and intelligence can be weapons and do not wield them against the weak. That makes you a bully. Be bigger than that.”

Later, Pratt implored, “God is real. God loves you, and God wants the best for you. Believe that, I do” while also encouraging the young people to learn to pray, which received applause.

Finishing the speech off, Pratt made his most politically incorrect statement of the night by telling the next generation that they’re imperfect. “Nobody is perfect,” Pratt said, “people are going to tell you-you’re perfect just the way you are. You’re not! You are imperfect, you always will be. But, there is a powerful force that designed you that way, and if you are willing to accept that, you will have grace, and grace is a gift. And, like the freedom we enjoy in this country, that grace was paid for with somebody else’s blood. Do not forget it, don’t take it for granted. God bless you.”

It seems rare to see an acceptance speech at a secular award show that isn’t politically polarizing these days. While other portions of Pratt’s “9 Rules” are clearly silly, his genuine desire to challenge young viewers way of thinking is worthy of applause, especially given the fact that so many young adults have either fallen away from the faith or have little to no exposure to Christianity.

Pratt gave himself to Jesus while living in Hawaii as a young man. At that time in his life, Pratt, in his early 20’s was working at a Bubba Gump Shrimp restaurant and lived on the beach. He was merely surviving. “I was sitting outside a grocery store. We’d convinced someone to go in and buy us beer,” Pratt told Vanity Fair. “This is Maui, and a guy named Henry came up and recognized something in me that needed to be saved. He asked what I was doing that night, and I was honest. I said, ‘My friend’s inside buying me alcohol.’ The man asked Pratt if he had plans on drinking, doing drugs and fornicating, and Pratt admitted that he hoped so. He continued, “I was charmed by this guy, don’t know why. He was an Asian dude, maybe Hawaiian, in his 40s. It should’ve made me nervous but didn’t. I said, ‘Why are you asking?’ He said, ‘Jesus told me to talk to you….’ At that moment I was like, I think I have to go with this guy. He took me to church. Over the next few days, I surprised my friends by declaring that I was going to change my life.”

After landing a part in the successful TV show PARKS AND RECREATION, Pratt’s stardom exploded after starring in Hollywood blockbusters like GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, JURASSIC WORLD, and THE LEGO MOVIE. Now, he’s one of the biggest stars worldwide.

In his free time, Pratt loves to spend time away from Hollywood on his farm with his son Jack, often posting pictures on Instagram of his livestock, usually with a Bible quote attached to the picture.

Chris Pratt’s platform is positive, and if he does nothing other than point people to God, and the Bible like he so often does on social media, then people’s lives will be touched. We pray that the people who heard his speech will take that spiritual advice to heart.
