THE HOUSEMAID

What You Need To Know:

THE HOUSEMAID is a suspense thriller from South Korea. A young woman comes to work for a rich family, taking care of the young wife, who’s pregnant with twins, and her daughter. The new nanny falls in lust with the husband, who starts taking advantage of the situation. Despite her feelings, there’s an element of exploitation in the relationship. Everything begins to go wrong, however, when the older cook, who has been with the family for more than 20 years, tells the mother-in-law about the illicit affair. The mother-in-law tries to kill the nanny by tripping her while she’s on a ladder cleaning the stairway chandelier. Miraculously, the nanny survives the fall, but the doctors discover she’s pregnant.

THE HOUSEMAID is a lurid tale with lewd content and a very depressing ending. There is some comedy to ease the tension. The movie clearly has a Marxist humanist worldview. Its main theme is how rich people mistreat their servants and the lower classes. Thus, class warfare seems to be the central, ultimate point. A side issue is how this evil affects the rich couple’s daughter. The movie’s explicit scenes are also abhorrent.
