GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER begins with a woman named Joanna, and her fiancé Dr. John Prentice when they from a trip where they met. Joanna is white, and John is black, but are madly in love with each other.

Joanna’s parents live in an affluent San Francisco neighborhood, and she would like to bring John home to them. John believes that Joanna should give them a warning about the situation, but Joanna insists there will be no problem. John and Joanna arrive at her parent’s home, and John uses her father’s study to make a phone call. While John is on the call, Joanna explains to her mother about the wonderful man she had just met in Hawaii. Joanna’s mother is joyful, but when John walks into the room she is shocked.

John informs Joanna’s mother that he is an intelligent doctor that has been associated with Yale, the World Health Organization and tropical medicine in Africa. She is impressed and begins to develop a bond with him. However, Joanna’s father is displeased and believes that the relationship will have too many obstacles. John and Joanna decide to stay for dinner so that John can get more acquainted with her parents.

Also, John’s parents call him and, as a surprise, tell him they’re flying to San Francisco to meet Joanna. They arrive at dinner and are shocked to see that Joanna is a white woman. The two families have dinner together, but the mothers and fathers have very different opinions. Joanna’s mom and John’s mom agree they just want their children to be happy, but the fathers disagree because they feel an interracial relationship would be too difficult. Meanwhile, John tells Joanna’s father that the marriage won’t make sense unless he and his wife give Joanna their blessing to marry John.

Can the others persuade the fathers to give the couple their blessing?
