Volunteers Collect iPads for Patients in Isolation

By Tess Farrand, Associate Content Editor

As thousands of COVID-19 hospital patients remain in isolation, volunteers across the country collect iPads for their enjoyment and relational connection.

“This is something that everybody has the ability to – in a few short steps – convert something in their drawer to a connection that will have so much impact,” said movie director Ian Kaplan, who’s helping with the effort through fundraising and documenting the cause on video.

Two medical students founded “iPads for Hospitals” to help bring comfort to those in need.

iPads to Hospitals shared their mission on their website:

Our mission is to bridge a communication gap between ill coronavirus patients and their loved ones through the donation of iPads to hospitals. Due to the highly infectious nature of the COVID-19 virus, hospitals have had to restrict visitors. While a necessary step to stop spread of the virus, a tragic reality has emerged – hospitalized patients are suffering and dying alone.

At the time of this writing, Kaplan and the seven others who head up the fundraising have raised nearly $35,000 of their $50,000 total, according to their GoFundMe page.

Kaplan shared a video of the iPad drop off that occurred on April 22, 2020.

However, iPads for Hospitals isn’t the only group looking to cheer up those in need with tablets.

Other groups like Hull York Medical School continue to provide iPads to health care workers, too.

Sound Radio Wales shows that these donations aren’t just happening in the U.S., they’re happening worldwide.

“This will enable residents and patients to maintain contact with their families whilst they are unable to have visitors at this difficult time,” according to the article.

Similar efforts continue to make headlines in the United Kingdom as well.
