Forrest Frank responded to a disagreement voiced by singer Jelly Roll after a video he posted to Instagram received a critical comment from the country artist.
In the original video, Frank revealed his decision to not attend any music awards ceremonies or receive any awards.
“I’m convicted, personally, that a line that I can draw is that I will not receive a trophy for something that is from Jesus, and for Jesus, and I was wrestling with this last year,” he said in a video posted Oct. 6. “I hope to be an example to the youth that the trophy is our salvation. The trophy is that my name is listed in the book of life and I get to have eternal life. What good is a piece of metal going to do.”
Jelly Roll, who is also a Christian, pushed back on the statement from Frank, insinuating that receiving money from your talents is no different than receiving trophies.
“Won’t receive trophy for something from Jesus for Jesus but will take the profits from something from Jesus for Jesus. Maybe I’m missing something here lol,” Jelly Roll’s statement reads.

Frank decided to then take to Instagram in another post to explain his heart in the situation.
“I wasn’t going to respond to this comment because I didn’t want to bring any unnecessary drama,” he began. “I posted my personal conviction. It triggered a lot of people. I had no idea that that was going to happen, but now Fox News has brought it up in People Magazine, so I feel like I’m inclined to speak on it all.”
Frank explained that he didn’t want to profit off of faith-based music or “make a business out of Jesus,” but he felt God calling him to release his content.
“One day, I felt like God was telling me to release I’ll call it my quiet time song, and I did,” he explained. “And here’s the thing, legally, it was self-produced and self-written. So legally that money comes to me. What I do with that money after it legally comes to me I’m never going to tell anybody, because your left hand isn’t supposed to know from your right hand.”
Should Christians attend award shows?
This refers to Matthew 6:3-4, which says, “But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
He said he could be giving 90% of his money away or 10%, but “you all are never going to know that because that’s my relationship with Jesus.”
Frank added, “I’m willing to be refined in any area.”
He then ended the video by encouraging Jelly Roll: “This is something that I would love to figure out, and in the meantime, I’m a safe place for you, bro, whether that’s on the phone or on here on social media, I’m for you, bro. God is for you. He has a plan for your life.”
Frank’s response is an excellent example of someone who took criticism and was willing to confront it with kindness.
James 1:19 says, “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” We should, like Frank, strive to respond to different opinions with grace and humility.
