Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos Get Candid About their Family in PEOPLE Magazine

By Allyson Vannatta, Senior Writer

Kelly Ripa, her husband Mark Consuelos, and their kids got candid about their family in the latest issue of PEOPLE Magazine for the family issue.

“As you get older and you learn more, that youngest kid hopefully benefits from a little bit more wisdom … and hopefully fewer nerves,” Ripa told PEOPLE.

As for Consuelos, the RIVERDALE actor isn’t as overprotective of his daughter, Lola, as he originally thought he would be as she’s grown up.

He said, “As overprotective as I thought I would be when she was born and I was holding her in my arms, I’ve mellowed a bit. Because I’m really aware of what a good head [she has] on her shoulders.”

Ripa and Consuelos’s three children agree their parents get more and more lenient as time passes.

Michael, the oldest of the three, teased, “Younger siblings get to do whatever they want right out of the gate.”

While the youngest, Joaquin, kind of agreed. He said, “My parents have softened up a lot now that I’m in high school.”

Lola also had to adhere to some restrictions while she was growing up.

“She had really wanted a public account, but we made her wait until she was an adult,” Ripa said. “She turned 18 and immediately went public.”

As for what Lola has learned from her pops, she said, “To take everything day by day — not to dwell on the past but to focus on the future,”

The kids aren’t the only ones learning new things from their parents. Ripa and Conseulos both divulged what they’ve learned from their kids.

Consuelos said, “You’ll have conversations with Joaquin where you realize you’ve just learned something new about the way he thinks.”

Ripa’s said she’s learned “so much about being a modern-day woman,” from her daughter. “It really gives me hope — her generation really supports each other, the way she and her friends have each other’s backs. For all the talk about women helping other women, I see it in her generation in a way I never have before.”
