The Honest-to-God Truth About the 2020 Election

By Jessilyn Lancaster, Managing Editor

In the chaos of today’s reports, few people are fixing their eyes beyond the outcome of the election. Few people are talking about what Christ offers us in the midst of all — peace, hope, comfort.

Instead, many media outlets are sowing discord. Celebrities are cashing in on endorsement deals. Some stars are afraid to speak publicly about their conservative values for fear of being blacklisted by Hollywood elite. Others are threatening to move out of the country if their desired candidate loses.

In many ways, this feels like the most divisive election in recent memory, with families split on how to vote based on issues close to their own hearts.

And it’s certainly not that Christians should sit out an election. Actually, it’s quite the opposite; we are called to transform culture, and by brining our voice to the public square, we can make the name of Jesus be known.

We also should remember not to be caught up in the backbiting and hateful comments that permeate social media comments.

This election is an opportunity to stand firm on many of Christ’s promises.

Jesus said in John 16: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

If your desired candidate does not win today, take it as a chance to meditate on the Sermon on the Mount as recorded in Matthew:

25“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life e ?

28“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

The honest-to-God truth about the election is that while it is our civic privilege to vote, it is our spiritual mandate to trust the Lord for the outcome and rest on His grace in the aftermath.

We must remember that our God is a God of victory — He’s already won the battle. No matter what happens in the material world, we have Him.

It’s so easy to get stressed about the outcome, but Christ offers peace for our anxiety.

Here are eight things you can commit to today, regardless of the election votes:

  1. Love and serve Jesus
  2. Care for your spouse, children, parents and other family
  3. Serve and give at your local church
  4. Pray for the president and all elected officials — regardless of who wins
  5. Pray for the spiritual leaders such as pastors and ministers in your life
  6. Pray for the nation, which is incredibly divided and needs God’s healing touch
  7. Strive to be a good employee or employer so you can bring the Kingdom to your workplace
  8. Pursue your God-given destiny and help as many people along the fulfill theirs, as well

Today, let’s celebrate who God is and how He is faithful and just in all things.

Praise the Lord for His enduring mercies.
