Erin Krakow Hints At When Hearties Can Expect Season 9 of WHEN CALLS THE HEART

By Movieguide® Staff

As fans of WHEN CALLS THE HEART await the premiere date of the highly anticipated Season 9, a recent post from Erin Krakow may have hinted at its start date.

Hallmark said that the show would return in 2022. The show’s titular star responded to eager fan questions in a Q&A on her Instagram. She also confirmed that “Hearties” could expect a return to Hope Valley in February 2022.

“Probably February 2022!” Krakow, who plays the teacher Elizabeth Thornton, replied to a fan question.

Also confirmed for the ninth season is the number of episodes. Like last season, Season 9 will include 12 episodes instead of 10 like in past seasons.

“#Hearties can look forward to not 10 new eps… but 12! You spoke loudly in S8 with the best ratings in our history… so your voice has been heard!” creator Brian Bird tweeted on July 12.

According to Bird, Hallmark’s most-watched show posted its most successful season yet, with Season 8 reaching an average of 3.3 million viewers per episode.

Although Season 8 left many fans wondering what would be next, Krakow is excited to explore new territory in the relationships of Hope Valley.

“We couldn’t be more excited to begin shooting season 9 of When Calls the Heart,” Krakow told ET in a previous interview. “It’s a wonderful feeling being back on set with the amazing cast and crew. There are a lot more stories to tell this season and thanks to the talented writing staff, there will be more drama, adventure, and romance and we can’t wait for our fans to see what Hope Valley has in store.”

The final episode shocked Hearties when the show resolved the ongoing love triangle between Elizabeth Thornton Thatcher (Erin Krakow), Mountie Nathan Grant (Kevin McGarry), and Lucas Bouchard (Chris McNally).

“We wanted to sort of find a new way to do a love story for Elizabeth,” the executive producer and co-creator said during an interview with Steve Greene on the Greenlines podcast. “So we didn’t just repeat the storyline that we had. That’s when we came up with this idea. Well, maybe it would be interesting if we put two very eligible, worthy bachelors in Hope Valley for Elizabeth. And the Hearties lined up on both sides of the equation.”

However, many of the Hearties who rooted for Elizabeth to end up with Nathan were disappointed and even mad about the character’s final decision.

“I really feel a big responsibility to give the Hearties Hope Valley for as many seasons as possible. We believe that’s good and that that decision is going to make that a possibility,” Bird added.

However, Bird confessed that the short-term frustrations from fans were something the creative team expected.

“We took the harder path, there’s no doubt about that. We know that this decision didn’t sit well with a lot of Hearties, but my request at least, and my hope is that the Hearties will trust us to do the right thing, as we always have done,” Bird said. “We’ve given them a show full of faith and love for eight seasons, and that’s not changing, that’s still the mandate for us.”

He continued: “We’re okay with some criticism, we’re fine with that. You know, God bless you, if you have a different opinion. Our attitude is, if you feel like you can’t watch the show anymore, God bless, but we will be waiting for you with open arms when you come back, or if you come back.”
