SHANG-CHI Breaks Pandemic-Era Box Office Milestone with $200 Million

Marvel’s SHANG-CHI: THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS has set a new bar in the pandemic-era box office after it became the first movie to earn $200 million in domestic ticket sales.

SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS is a comical action entry in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. It introduces a Chinese superhero who ran away from his criminal father who trained him to be an assassin. The father uses 10 powerful arm rings to enlarge and run his criminal 10 Rings empire. Shang-Chi (“Shawng-Chee”) learns his widowed father is being deceived by a demonic, imprisoned “soul-eating” monster into thinking a mystical village guarding a magical land is holding his dead wife’s spirit prisoner. The father intends to destroy the village, free his mother’s soul and use the rings to bring Shang-Chi’s mother back to life.
SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS is a funny superhero movie with lots of exciting action. It has terrific martial arts stunt fighting. The movie has a mixed worldview, however. There are some strong moral, redemptive themes such as baptism, sacrifice, death and resurrection, reconciliation, and overcoming demonic “soul-eating” monsters. However, SHANG-CHI has lots of action violence, some fantasy and occult content, scary monsters, and some foul language. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises serious caution for impressionable children.
The last movie to earn over $200 million at the domestic box office was BAD BOYS FOR LIFE in February 2020, before COVID-19 shut down theaters.
The milestone is a breath of fresh air for Disney. The exclusive theater release also offers hope for exhibitors who have questioned the previous day-to-date release strategy.
SHANG-CHI surpassed Marvel’s previous installation, BLACK WIDOW, which received a theatrical release alongside a release on streaming.
Disney announced that the remaining slate of 2021 movies would receive an exclusive theater release after the recent success of SHANG-CHI.

SHANG-CHI’s record-breaking Labor Day weekend performance gave the studio enough assurance that, with the right movie, audiences are ready to come back to theaters.
“Following the tremendous box office success of our summer films which included five of the top eight domestic releases of the year, we are excited to update our theatrical plans for the remainder of 2021,” Kareem Daniel, chairman of Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution, said. “As confidence in moviegoing continues to improve, we look forward to entertaining audiences in theaters, while maintaining the flexibility to give our Disney+ subscribers the gift of Encanto this holiday season.”
