By Movieguide® Staff

Chris Evans will suit up as Buzz Lightyear in the upcoming Pixar animated movie, LIGHTYEAR, which will tell the iconic space ranger’s origin story.

According to a newly released teaser trailer, the spinoff of Disney’s classic TOY STORY franchise is set to release in Summer 2022.

“To infinity and … 🚀 Experience the origin story of a Space Ranger in Disney and Pixar’s #Lightyear, in theaters Summer 2022,” Pixar wrote in the YouTube description. “Check out a brand-new trailer for Disney and Pixar’s “Lightyear,” an original feature film releasing June 17, 2022. The sci-fi action-adventure presents the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear—the hero who inspired the toy—introducing the legendary Space Ranger who would win generations of fans.”

Evans posted a screenshot on Twitter, calling the opportunity to continue the legacy of Woody’s best friend a “dream come true.”

“The phrase ‘a dream come true’ gets thrown around a lot, but I’ve never meant it more in my life,” the screenshot quotes Evans as saying. “Anyone who knows me knows that my love for animated films runs deep.”

“I can’t believe that I get to be a part of the Pixar family and work with these truly brilliant artists who tell stories unlike anyone else,” the statement continued. “Watching them work is nothing short of magic. I pinch myself every day.”

The character of Buzz first appeared in Pixar’s debut feature movie in 1995, TOY STORY, voiced by Tim Allen. Since then, Buzz, Woody and a colorful cast of toys have appeared in three sequels and many animated shorts.

Movieguide® awarded TOY STORY, TOY STORY 2, TOY STORY 3 with the prize for Best Family-Friendly Movie of the Year and nominated TOY STORY 4.

A portion of Movieguide®’s review of TOY STORY reads

The first totally computer-animated movie is TOY STORY. It answers the question “What happens to my toys when I leave the room?” in a wonderful, moral, fantastic way. In the movie, Woody is a cowboy doll, voiced by Tom Hanks, who envies the new favorite toy in town, Buzz Lightyear, space ranger, voiced by Tim Allen. When their fighting gets Woody and Buzz left behind at a gas station, they have to start working together to get home. TOY STORY is funny, clean, wholesome, and virtuous — a classic beginning to a new genre and a masterpiece which is sure to capture the imaginations of young and old alike.

While Movieguide® has yet to review LIGHTYEAR, Pixar has an opportunity to continue their decades-long run of family-friendly, moral, and heartfelt stories for parents and children to enjoy together.
