BELFAST Earns 7 Golden Globe Nominations As Award Season Ramps Up

By Movieguide® Staff

Famed Hollywood director and four-time Oscar-nominated actor Kenneth Branagh’s most recent picture, BELFAST, leads all movies in Golden Globe nods with seven.

Branagh said that BELFAST, which he directed and wrote, was his “most personal film” and is the semi-autobiographical story of his childhood growing up in Northern Ireland in the 1960s.

So far, BELFAST has secured nominations for Best Motion Picture (Drama), Best Director Motion Picture (Branagh), and Best Screenplay (Branagh).

As Movieguide® previously reported:

BELFAST reflects Branaugh’s childhood growing up in Belfast in the 1960s. The actor, writer, and director said it is his most personal project.

“It’s about memory,” Branuagh said in a recent press conference. “The psychologist says the facts of our life are less important than how we remember them. And so I was remembering this with a decision to look through the eyes of a 9-year-old. I was remembering him from 50 years ago.”

Branaugh noted that the movie also reflects the current struggle with COVID-19, which gave people and their families a unique opportunity to reflect on their lives.

“You end up looking inward,” Branaugh said. “I think a lot of us did this during the pandemic and separated from things that were so familiar to us that we perhaps took for granted and particularly from people that we took for granted,” he continued. “I think it was a chance to look back. I wanted to shake hands with a 9-year-old kid.

“I think that that readjustment involves dealing with some form of loss, which can be painful. And the result can also be beautiful, but it’s bittersweet,” he added.

Actor Ciarán Hinds received a nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture, alongside BELFAST co-star Jamie Dornan. Hinds and Dornan play father and son in the movie.

Caitriona Balfe, who plays Ma, also earned a nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role. To round off the nominations, Van Morrison was nominated for Best Original Song (Motion Picture) for his track “Down to Joy.”

The winners of the Golden Globes will be announced on Jan. 9, 2022, and Branagh is hopeful for the upcoming Oscars.

Movieguide®’s review of BELFAST reads:

BELFAST is a beautifully crafted drama about the lives of a young boy, Buddy, and his Protestant family in the Northern Ireland town during the Fall and Christmas of 1969. It’s a time of social upheaval when tensions between Protestants and Catholics break out into violence. Buddy’s father and mother argue about moving the family to England, where the father has a possible permanent job and house arranged for them. Meanwhile, Buddy explores the mysteries and joys of life through his relationships with his parents, grandparents, his cousin, a pretty girl in his class, and the culture around him.

BELFAST is brilliant, life-affirming, dramatic, funny, and sometimes heartbreaking. Beautifully written and directed by Kenneth Branagh, the movie has a strong Christian, morally uplifting worldview. It extols family, doing the right thing, faith, compassion, Godly love, gratitude, peace, courage, and joy. However, the movie contains strong foul language, violence and a universalist comment that undermines the New Testament biblical warning against being unequally yoked. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children and young teenagers. That said, BELFAST is a wonderful movie for mature viewers.
