Joe Rogan Could Exit $200 million Spotify Deal: ‘If I Become Something Different, I Will Quit’

By Movieguide® Staff

After controversy arose over podcaster Joe Rogan for his views on vaccine mandates and past racial slurs, his $200 million deal with Spotify could end.

Rogan, who hosts one of the most popular podcasts in history, “The Joe Rogan Experience,” said that he would cancel the deal should he have “to walk on eggshells.”

In a recent episode, Rogan and his guest, MMA fighter Josh Barnett, discussed the future of free speech on the platform.

“There’s more people pouring over it but it’s the same thing. I do it the same way,” Rogan said of his show. “If I become something different because it grew bigger, I will quit. If it gets to a point that I can’t do it anymore, where I have to do it in some sort of weird way where I walk on eggshells and mind my p’s and q’s!”

Rogan agreed to the deal with Spotify in 2020, which would continue through 2023. According to Daily Mail, Rogan’s potential early exit could breach his contract with the music streaming platform.

“It seems that there could be a large amount of money involved here in the event of a breach of the agreement by either (or both) parties, which could make a lawsuit worthwhile,” entertainment lawyer Cassandra Spangler told DailyMail. “It would also be interesting to know whether there is anything in the contract that gives him full creative control over his podcast or whether there are terms that allow Spotify to censor or remove content based on certain standards.”

Currently, there’s a war of words between several entertainment figures, and at its core is the freedom of speech.

Joe Rogan, host of the top podcast on Spotify “The Joe Rogan Experience,” recently stirred up controversy on his show for interviewing an infectious disease specialist who opposes COVID-19 vaccines for children. Legendary folk and rock artist Neil Young responded by giving Spotify an ultimatum, accusing the streaming giant of “spreading fake information about vaccines – potentially causing death to those who believe the disinformation being spread by them.”

Spotify replied to the singer’s ultimatum, stating, “We want all the world’s music and audio content to be available to Spotify users with that comes great responsibility and balancing both safety for listeners and freedom for creators.”

In the end, Rogan remains on Spotify and Young exited with his music library and the support of his record label Warner Brothers-owned Reprise Records.
