New Poll Finds Millennials And Gen Z Hold Strong Pro-Life Opinions

By Movieguide® Contributor

A recent poll conducted by Students for Life of America broke down how Millennials and Gen Z-ers feel about abortion.

“As an organization of mostly Millennials and Gen Z, we’ve been frustrated by all the sweeping statements made about our views on the human rights issue of the day. And as the age range most targeted for abortion, the views of Millennials an Gen Z on an industry that has ended the lives of one-quarter of our generation are extremely relevant,” said Students for Life of America President Kristan Hawkins.

“Far from embracing Planned Parenthood and the Democratic Party Line,” Hawkins continued. “Millennials and Gen Z have a more nuanced view of abortion that embraces a number of pro-life positions: Limits on abortion and taxpayer funding were supported, Reversing Roe was acceptable; and Voting on abortion policy embraced.”

Some of the poll’s key findings were:

    • Almost 7 out of 10 Millennials and Gen Z want to vote on abortion-related policy.
    • Less than 2 out of 10 want unlimited abortion through all 9 months, for any reason at all and sometimes with taxpayer funding, which Roe allows.
    • 6 in 10 believe schools should protect students’ free speech rights.
    • Almost HALF supported banning abortion after a heartbeat detected.

“Asked directly about reversing Roe to return the issue of abortion to the states, more Millennials and Gen Z supported reversing Roe and sending abortion policy to the voters than opposed it, by a margin of 44 % in favor to 36 % opposed and 18 % unsure,” Hawkins explained.

“The number of respondents opposing Roe and Doe nearly doubled after learning more about what the law allows. This number is extraordinary considering Planned Parenthood claims that Roe is popular and that 77 percent of the American people oppose reversing it, which would simply return the issue of abortion to the states where the people could have a voice and a vote on life-related policy.  When they learn about what Roe v. Wade actually does, Millennial and Gen Z oppose it.”

Movieguide® has previously reported on the abortion, especially how it pertains to the entertainment industry:

Nearly ten years ago, a New York Times article showed that Hollywood movies with female characters having unexpected pregnancies rarely end with them getting an abortion. According to the article, “Historically and to this day in television and film – historians, writers and those in the movie industry say – a character in such straits usually conveniently miscarries or decides to keep the baby.”

Ten years later, however, an occasional television show bucks this trend, such as an episode of the popular TV program SCANDAL from last year, which unashamedly showed the main character having an abortion.

Happily, though, moviegoers still prefer films that celebrate life and having children.

Recently, the animated movie SING included a cartoon pig character, who was the mother of many little piglets. Audiences were thrilled to see her character cleverly solving her problem of taking care of so many children while pursuing her dreams of winning a local singing competition.

So far, SING has brought in nearly $240 million at the box office in the U.S. and Canada, and climbing, to become the 10th highest grossing movie of 2016.

One of the strongest pro-life examples of 2016 was the acclaimed science fiction movie ARRIVAL, which starred Amy Adams as a female scientist whose character a New York Post reporter called “a pro-life heroine for the ages.” That’s because the movie depicted Amy’s character choosing to have a baby even though she knew the child later would die early from an incurable disease.

ARRIVAL has grossed more than $160 million worldwide.

Despite occasional movies like this, the trend in Hollywood movies still favors strong pro-life messages. Moviegoers prefer movies where mothers and their babies or children are saved, movies that celebrate new life wherever it is found.
