Kirk Cameron: ‘The Real World Heroes, According to God’s Word, Are Parents’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Kirk Cameron urged parents to pass their faith to their children, explaining that as the culture becomes more hostile, parents are the greatest source of generational change.

“History tells us the stability of Christian civilization depends on families passing the torch of truth to the next generation. You and I are in a a relay race, and we’re passing the baton of covenantal purpose that touches back over 200 years, back over four centuries to our American ancestors. And in times of the deepest darkness, in trouble, parents who train their children in the ways of God have always transformed the world. Not just their own heart but their entire civilizations,” Cameron explains.

Cameron frequently promotes the influential role of parents.

In his new documentary, THE HOMESCHOOL AWAKENING, Cameron calls on parents to “Take back the leadership role in the education of our children so we can better prepare them for their future,” as Movieguide® previously reported.

“The real-world heroes, according to God’s Word, are parents,” Cameron said on his TBN show. “That’s perhaps the most powerful platform that anyone will ever have for instituting generational change for the good in the world.”

How can parents make this change? For Cameron, the answer comes from a well-known passage in Deuteronomy 6 called the Shema. In it, God tells Israel what they needed to do “so that they didn’t lose their children to a godless culture.”

“Shema here means ‘Listen.’ It means ‘Wake up. This is important. This is critical. If you miss this, you’re going to lose your country,’ so this is applicable for us today,” Cameron says.

Parents need to “know God, know who your God is, know his character, and know his attributes.” Cameron adds, “If we don’t understand who God is by reading our Bibles, by understanding the mighty deeds that he has done in the past, we won’t understand his faithfulness. We won’t understand his holy character. We won’t understand grace.”

Parents who have God’s word in their hearts and understand his character should “teach them diligently to your children.”

Teaching through example will be more powerful than just telling children what to believe. Cameron explains, “By you living these things out yourself, you’re going to give credibility to everything that you’re saying to them. They’re going to realize you’re not just religious hypocrites. You are living them out first, then you’re teaching them to your children, and you’re passing the baton to the next generation.”

Cameron believes this is “the recipe for turning America or any nation back around.”

Parents “must know and love God. We must live in a way that’s honoring to him. Not just when we go to church. Not just on Sundays or the Lord’s day but in our businesses, in the way that we treat our neighbors, the way that we elect leaders to run our our civic institutions, and we must pass the torch to our children and our children’s children.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Kirk Cameron and parenting:

Kirk Cameron sat down with his sisters, Candace Cameron Bure, Bridgette Cameron and Melissa Cameron, to talk about how they instill Christ-like values in their children despite today’s culture.

“[The thing I want them to take away] would be the love from the Lord,” Melissa said. “I want to pass on to my children…it would be to really trust your mom and dad and God, who know you and love you.”

Kirk agreed: “Think of how many more voices are in our kids’ ears, through their phone with social media….how important it is to have a trusted voice.”

The siblings also talked about watching their children grow up and leave home, and the different choices they’ve made as parents, such as schooling.

Melissa spoke about her and her husband’s decision to home-school their children and how it has increased their time spent together as a family.

“What I love the most about it is it…gives me time with them,” she said. “I get to delight in them and enjoy them.”

Melissa added that “family always came first,” during their childhood.

After their discussion, the siblings decided to go to the go-kart track and race each other. The trip ended in the ER after Candace crashed her go-kart.

“She’s doing fine; she’s just bruised up,” Kirk explained, joking: “I have taken sibling rivalry to a whole new level.”

At the end of the discussion, the Cameron siblings prayed and thanked God for protecting Candace and for a speedy recovery.

“They say the family that prays together, stays together,” Kirk said.
