Astros Pitcher Surprises Young Fan with Autographed Game Glove

In late July, Houston Astros pitcher Lance McCullers sent a young fan an autographed game glove after the boy’s original glove signed by the pitcher was stolen.
“It’s just an opportunity to make a kid’s day, and I think a lot of guys on our team are always looking for opportunities to do that,” McCullers said. “I knew the glove would bring him a lot of happiness, so I got it signed and sent it out to him.”
Eleven-year-old Ben Brothers lost most of his baseball equipment when his family’s truck was stolen at a baseball tournament.
While other baseball families helped replace most of the equipment so Ben could continue at the tournament, his glove signed by McCullers earlier in the year was irreplaceable.
Then one day, a package appeared at the Brothers’ home. Inside, Ben found an authentic Lance McCullers game glove, complete with the pitcher’s stitched name and autograph in silver Sharpie.
“He’s just beyond ecstatic, overjoyed, I guess you’d say,” Ben’s father, Brent said of his son’s reaction to the surprise.
While Ben used his old glove for games, he has different plans for this one.
“He says he’s putting it in a glass case and going to keep it there forever,” Brent said.
The Brothers family doesn’t know how the story of their stolen truck and Ben’s baseball equipment reached McCullers, but they suspect someone in their “baseball family” is friends with him and his wife Kara.
“I’d like to do something to show them our appreciation for the gesture, because it just really shows the character of him and his wife,” he said. “I was trying to think of something I could do, but I probably don’t have much that they don’t already have. I do smoke a pretty mean brisket, so I could do that for them or something. Even if not, I just really want them to know: Thank you so much. What you did means a ton to all of us. I didn’t think we could be any bigger Astros fans than we already are, and we’ll be Lance McCullers fans forever.”
“I try to make an impact on people when opportunities present themselves,” McCullers explained when asked why he sent the glove to Ben. “I’m very grateful for the Astros fanbase and all the support, so I like to try to do what I can when I can.”
