Jeff Saturday Takes Over As Colts Interim Head Coach: ‘[God’s] Ultimately In Charge of the Results’

Indianapolis Colts recently hired Jeff Saturday as the team’s interim head coach for the remainder of the NFL season.

The change came after Colts owner Jim Irsay made the announcement in a press conference.

While Saturday has the pedigree for the job as a six-time Pro Bowl center, he said that the news came as a surprise.

However, Saturday was happy to accept the job after prayer and consulting his wife, Karen.

“We had the conversation, we talked about it and prayed about it,” Saturday said. “Then as the day progressed this morning, we finally came to a conclusion. But it was a 12-hour whirlwind.”

Irsay said that he appreciated Saturday’s leadership abilities. After retiring in 2012, Saturday worked as an ESPN sports analyst and a consultant for the Colts.

“I’ve gleaned a lot and I continue to try and grow as a leader, but I think that’s probably my strongest quality, is I’m a leader of men,” Saturday said. “I don’t shy away from it and [I am] excited about it. That’s my passion and I love it. Football just so happens to fit that mold. But that’s what I love — when I can do the two things I love, I can lead a group of men and coach football, I’m not going to say no to that.”

While Football has been the topic of conversation for Saturday recently, even more important to the 47-year-old is how leads within his Church as a man of faith.

In an episode of the Sports Spectrum podcast from 2018, Saturday revealed that he did not come to Christ until he made it to the NFL. However, once he made the decision to follow Christ, there was no turning back.

“I remember the relationships. … That’s what my wife and I sit back and look at and love,” he said at the time. “That’s what the NFL for me was really about. The wins and losses, Super Bowls, it’s all cool. Ring of honor, all good. Pro Bowls, all good. But real lives changing for the better and still making it and still moving in the right direction is the thing that I look on the most fondly.”

He added in a recent interview on the TRANSFORMED podcast: “He’s ultimately in charge of all the results, and so as long as I’m doing my part of doing what I feel led to do — prayerful, grateful, the way that I’m going to live — and I feel like I’m moving in the direction that God has asked me, the results part is now in His hands.”
