M.I.A. Defends Her Conversion To Christianity Amid ‘Biggest Backlash In [Her] Career’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Singer and rapper M.I.A. has taken to social media to hit back at critics of her newfound faith in Jesus Christ.

Movieguide® previously reported on M.I.A.’s faith journey:

Musician M.I.A. recently revealed the moment that convinced her to become a Christian in 2017.

In an interview with Zane Lowe, she said: “Being a Tamil and being a Hindu, I was very comfortable that I’d arrived finding myself. Which is, I think, going to be weird for America to process. But I had a vision and I saw the vision of Jesus Christ.”

“It’s a very crazy thing because it turned my world upside down,” she continued. “Because everything I thought and believed was no longer the case. And I think that was maybe a sign that something major was going to happen in the world and that people were needing to be introduced to this concept.”

She confirmed that she was a born-again Christian.

“When I had this vision, it turned my world upside down,” M.I.A. explained. “I kind of couldn’t let go of the Tamil side. I think that’s why 50% of the record is sort of like that. Because I’m still me. That’s still my language. And those are still my tools to be able to create beats like that or a sound like that. But I think the message was just to get to a peaceful place. Watch the space.”

“The history is, even if it costs me my career, I won’t lie,” she said. “I will tell the truth, and I will tell you what’s on my mind and my heart.”

She tweeted, “The fact that the biggest backlash in my career and life I’m facing after saying ‘Jesus is real’ is such a revelation to me. People who control these apps rather me be a bad girl, then a good one.”

The artist talked more about her conversion in an interview with Relevant.

“In my time of need, the God that turned up to save me was not Shiva. It was Jesus,” M.I.A. said.

She continued, “That is the truth, and I have to say that. The only clear thing I can say is that even when I had no belief in Jesus Christ and Christianity, and even when I was 100% comfortable in Hinduism, it was a Christian God that turned up to save me.”
