Actor Jason Momoa Urges People to Avoid Travel to Maui Amid Wildfires

Following the devastating wildfires on Maui, actor and Hawaiian native Jason Momoa has urged people to avoid traveling to the island.

In an Instagram post, he shared, “Maui is not the place to have your vacation right now. DO NOT TRAVEL TO MAUI. Do not convince yourself that your presence is needed on an island that is suffering this deeply. Mahalo to everyone who has donated and shown aloha to the community in this time of need.”

“The devastation from the wildfires will have a lasting island-wide impact on Maui’s resources,” his post continued.

The wildfires, which broke out on August 8, have destroyed much of Maui and displaced many.

CNN reports:

“The official death toll has reached 96 in the wildfires on Maui, and there are warnings it could rise further. The blaze that devastated the historic town of Lahaina is now the deadliest US wildfire in over 100 years, officials said.”

Momoa also used his platform to share resources and ways people can help.

He reposted a post from Aina Momona, a nonprofit Hawaiian environmental organization, which reads, “Maui needs you now more than ever. We are so grateful for the overwhelming support we have received for Maui. Many have reached out asking how they can directly help families.”

It continues, “We are working with community members on the ground to provide immediate funds to verified GoFundMe fundraisers and Venmo fundraisers to families who lost their homes in the wildfires. A list of these verified fundraisers and resources will also be posted to our website for those who would like to donate directly to survivors.”

Hawaiian governor Josh Green said, “It will certainly be the worst natural disaster that Hawaii ever faced. We can only wait and support those who are living. Our focus now is to reunite people when we can and get them housing and get them health care, and then turn to rebuilding,” according to Fox News.

Continue to pray for those facing the loss and devastation caused by these wildfires.
