The NFL’s annual pre-season Hall of Fame game aired last Thursday on NBC and reached over 6.3 million viewers, making it the most-watched Hall of Fame game since 2018.

“The Hall of Fame game, in which the Cleveland Browns beat the New York Jets by a score of 21-16, was the most-watched broadcast television show last week,” Forbes reported.

The game garnered 6.3 million viewers–5.9 million on NBC and 0.4 million on Peacock and NBC Sports Digital.

“Sports in general and the NFL in particular dominated television viewing in 2022. According to recently released data from Nielsen NLSN 0.0%, sports accounted for 94 of the 100 most watched telecasts last year,” Forbes added in another article.

“The NFL alone accounted for a record 82 of the 100 telecasts, up from 75 in 2021,” Forbes continued. “The remaining top-rated sporting events for the year were five college football games, three World Cup matches, two college basketball games, one Winter Olympics (airing after the Super Bowl) and the Kentucky Derby.”

USA Today reported on the NFL’s first week of the regular season:

“The NFL’s 272-game slate kicks off with the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs hosting the Detroit Lions at Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 7. The season’s opening week also will feature Aaron Rodgers’ debut with the New York Jets on MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL against the Buffalo Bills.”

Movieguide® previously reported on the NFL’s broadcasting deal:

Streaming services proved to be the primary source of entertainment this past year, solidifying that television’s future is moving away from traditional broadcast TV.

However, live sports have been viewed as a stalwart of traditional television.

The NFL recently agreed to new rights deals with their current broadcast partners. But with a steep 79.5% increase, which comes out to an additional $4.54 billion a year, the future of live sports on broadcast television is expected to end.

The deals include Amazon acquiring the majority of “Thursday Night Football” games and multicast options for various streaming services.
