Willie Robertson Reflects on Family’s Redemptive Story, Inspiration Behind THE BLIND

By Movieguide® Contributor

Sadie Robertson Huff spoke with her father, Willie Robertson, about their family’s history–the inspiration behind the upcoming movie THE BLIND–on a recent “Whoa That’s Good” podcast episode.

Robertson discussed how his parents, Phil and Kay Robertson, encountered God and overcame their broken marriage, mental health issues and more to get where they are today.

“I think it’s remarkable really, just coming out of [everything] and ending up being successful in business and obviously TV and all that from where they came from,” Robertson shared.

“So that’s impressive…just really coming out and changing…a link in a chain that was looking like it was just desperateness,” he added.

Robertson also shared how DUCK DYNASTY changed their family’s life and allowed them to share the gospel.

“When I first approached [Phil] about doing television and he was just like a hard no, like ‘No, you know, nobody’s gonna watch this,’” Robertson recalled. “I told him ‘Well, Dad, I think it could be a bigger platform for us to get the gospel out.’ When I said that he said ‘Well, if it’ll get the gospel out, then I’ll do it.’”

Phil had a similar response when Robertson approached him about making a movie about his life. While initially hesitant, Phil decided his story was another opportunity to share the gospel.

“If we can show this and show how you were and show how your family was and how you had really messed everything up through sin…and show that you can be redeemed,” Robertson added, “ I think at that thought [Phil’s] like ‘Well, if it helps someone…be open to the gospel and receptive.’”

THE BLIND will premiere in theaters from September 28 through October 5.

Movieguide® previously reported on THE BLIND:

The movie, set in the Deep South in the 1960s, tells the story of Robertson’s life, including his struggles with addiction.

“This movie shows me at my worst moments. It wasn’t easy for me to watch, especially at first,” Robertson said. “But The Blind is also a movie about love and hope. If a scoundrel like me can be redeemed, then believe me, so can you. There’s nothing you’ve done that’s beyond God’s grace.”

“It was important to us that the film be real,” said Willie Robertson, Robertson’s son. “The transformation of Phil proves that anyone can change and that there is always hope.”
