‘A Million Reasons To Celebrate’: Maverick City’s Ryan Ofei Talks New EP

By Movieguide® Contributor

Maverick City Music’s Ryan Ofei calls his latest EP, “Celebrate,” a “raw and authentic” look at his faith.

“God’s given me a million reasons to celebrate,” Ofei said of the inspiration behind his project’s title.

“Celebrate” features four tracks, including the title track, which details a car accident that almost ended Ofei’s life when he was 18.

“My four best friends and I went clubbing in Montreal for my 18th birthday. On our way back home, we almost got into a life-ending accident with an 18-wheeler truck skidding in a bad snowstorm. We looked back at the winter road behind us and saw no cars. It was as if the hand of God had guided us out of the accident,” he shared about that moment in an Instagram post.

“We started praying and thanking God for saving our lives,” he continued. “As soon as I got back to school, I went to my church’s retreat and dedicated my life to Christ. I made the decision for myself this time. I was healed, set free, and experienced true freedom. It was as if I had never been alive before that moment.”

“‘Celebrate’ is the first song we made in the sessions for my upcoming album,” the singer said. “I started writing it with some of my friends in Ottawa and then we finished it at a writing camp in Toronto. It was an eye-opening experience for me because the producers in the room – Jordon Manswell, Kofo and the crew, took me to a new space sonically. I’m singing about the freedom that I experience by walking in my faith but doing it in a way that feels raw and authentic.”

In addition to his work with Maverick City Music, Ofei is a prolific solo artist.

Speaking about his 2023 EP “Limitless Worship” with Keep The Faith magazine, Ofei explained that he sees his music as “an opportunity to enter into the presence of God and pray.”

“I want it to be something that facilitates an atmosphere for people to be free, really give God their best, and receive whatever He has for them,” he shared. “I love God, I love His people, and I love cultivating ways in which we can get to know Him more.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Maverick City Music’s success:

Maverick City Music was one of the biggest winners at this year’s Grammy’s, sweeping nearly every Christian music category and tying with Beyoncé for the most wins of the night.

The group took home four trophies for Best Gospel Performance/Song, Best Gospel Album, Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song and Best Contemporary Christian Music Album.

“I’m super grateful to God and what He’s able to do when you just decide to give your life to serve other people and to uplift voices that are not normally heard,” Maverick City Music member Naomi Raine said after accepting the Best Gospel Album award.

“Still speechless,” Maverick City Music wrote in an Instagram post. “God is so good!! We are honored that we get to glorify Him!”
